How does a Customer Engineer typically collaborate with sales and product teams to address client needs?

Customer Engineers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between clients and internal teams. They often join sales representatives during client meetings to provide technical expertise, clarify product capabilities, and address technical concerns in real time. Additionally, they work closely with product teams to relay customer feedback, suggest improvements, and stay updated on new features or releases. This collaboration ensures that customer requirements are met efficiently, and that both pre-sales and post-sales technical support are aligned with the company's offerings.

What are Customer Engineers?

Customer Engineers are technical professionals who provide support, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting services for a company's products or systems, often directly at customer sites. They act as a bridge between the company and its clients, ensuring that technical issues are resolved swiftly and customer satisfaction is maintained. Customer Engineers may work in various industries, such as IT, manufacturing, or electronics, and are often responsible for training clients on product usage. Their role requires strong technical knowledge, communication skills, and the ability to solve problems efficiently.

To thrive as a Customer Engineer, you need a strong background in technical troubleshooting, systems integration, and relevant industry knowledge, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. We are looking for a talented  Customer Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Business Service segment in Salt Lake City, UT.

Job Summary:

This entry level/early career professional, dual customer/product focused position serves as the technical liaison between OEMs and represents our customers during new product development programs. Applying Cummins' products to customer vehicles requires the development of technical specifications, implementing new design configurations, and delivering high performance, low-cost equipment and system solutions integrated with customers' products in a variety of applications. Integrating high quality and optimized customer solutions requires the interaction with sales and marketing teams.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Drive rootcause resolution by investigating integration and installation issues, understanding causal mechanisms, recommending corrective actions, and owning documentation of results.
  • Strengthen installation quality by applying and improving key processes such as Installation Quality Assurance, OEM integration, and product selection using tools like Advisor, COLS, and GCE.
  • Enable crossfunctional alignment by gathering input from SMEs and VPI teams, negotiating requirements, and delivering accurate product data and installation guidance to Application Engineers and OEMs.
  •  Influence machine performance through sound decisions on product selection, design, and integration that directly affect OEM optimization, reliability, and quality.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison by building strong relationships with customer technical counterparts, managing specifications, communicating product changes, and resolving installation issues.
  • Translate customer needs into functional product requirements using deep product, application, and market knowledge to support OEM product selection and equipment design.
  • Ensure flawless installations by validating prototype machine performance, confirming compliance with Cummins requirements, and ensuring products are applied correctly for customer environments.
  • Advance team execution by independently executing established processes, contributing to continuous improvement, coordinating technician or student work when needed, and influencing team goals.
Cummins is an equal opportunity employer. Our policy is to provide equal employment opportunities to all qualified persons without regard to race, sex, color, disability, national origin, age, religion, union affiliation, sexual orientation, veteran status, citizenship, gender identity, or other status protected by law.

Core Responsibilities / Activities

  • Serve as the primary technical liaison between OEM customers and cross-functional internal teams during product integration, installation, and issue resolution activities.
  • Lead Installation Quality Assurance (IQA) reviews, support prototype machine validation, and drive timely resolution of customer and field-related technical concerns.
  • Coordinate with Sales, service, controls/calibration, manufacturing, and design engineering teams to support successful product implementation and customer satisfaction.

Skill, Education, or Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related STEM field required.
  • Experience supporting OEM customers, product integration, machine systems, or technical troubleshooting activities.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a customer-focused environment.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements, installation guidelines, and engineering documentation while working across cross-functional teams.

Preferred Skills or Experience

  • Prior experience with off-highway equipment, engine integration, or Installation Quality Assurance (IQA) processes.
  • Familiarity with Cummins technical systems, OEM development processes, or customer support environments preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate's qualifications and experience, where appropriate.

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Master machine integration by applying Cummins installation standards, optimizing subsystem performance, and resolving technical issues through disciplined troubleshooting.
  • Support machine operation by monitoring system behavior, addressing failures quickly, and adapting solutions to evolving customer needs and operating conditions.
  • Deliver strong product application support by creating accurate technical content, defining installation requirements, and using Cummins tools to guide OEM design and sales decisions.
  • Influence design through modeling and simulation by interpreting analytical and computational results to shape product capability at the system, subsystem, and component levels.
  • Ensure installation quality by validating prototype performance, applying standard Cummins processes, and driving improvements that reduce rework and ensure compliance.
  • Solve product problems effectively by identifying root causes, implementing robust corrective actions, and preventing recurrence through datadriven analysis.
  • Guide product selection by matching customer applications with the right Cummins offerings, optimizing specifications, and preventing misapplication through strong technical judgment.
  • Lead technical customer management by serving as the primary technical interface, communicating product changes, providing engineering data, and ensuring seamless customer integration and operation.
    Education, Licenses, Certifications:
College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
    Experience:
    Entry level/Early career professional.
