This role is part of Enterprise Technology (ET), where we're developing the digital infrastructure needed to build the road to space, with an emphasis on digital capabilities required to advance Blue Origin's mission. Enterprise Technology is the center of excellence for digital technology at Blue Origin, providing oversight and governance to align technology and business strategies.

As a Software Engineer- Front end, you will play a vital role within a team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, significantly contributing to various spaceflight systems. You will be an integral member of an expert team supporting manufacturing by developing software platforms that facilitate real-time analysis and decision-making.

Your role will involve utilizing your expertise in front end development, including technologies like React, Python, FastAPI, AWS, Spring Boot, and Node.js, to develop and maintain complex software solutions. You will contribute to software development and optimization efforts, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams to ensure optimal quality and performance of our systems.

We continuously innovate in automating and accelerating product delivery using cutting-edge software and hardware technologies. By utilizing the latest AWS and GenAI platforms, we build distributed, highly available systems to achieve our objectives.

You will report directly to the Smart Factory Senior Engineering Manager and collaborate closely with team members to fully understand and address their needs. In your role, you will also lead initiatives aimed at enhancing team productivity and creativity.

As a development team member, your ability to innovate, provide direction for better user experience, and deliver efficient solutions is crucial to managing the entire development process. Successful engineers not only meet complex requirements but also propose and implement innovative, cutting-edge solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop & implement new user experience for tools and applications that enable manufacturing teams to automate existing processes and standardize on performance-based benchmarks.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and deployment of successful enterprise-scale systems and services in support of operations and the businesses they support.
  • Design and implement user interface for machine connectivity and data pipelines from Machines/Tools/ equipment using MTConnect, OPC UA, and MQTT; contextualize with MES/ERP/QMS/PLM data.
  • Leverage AI technologies and tools (e.g., LLMs, computer vision models) to enhance software capabilities, improve automation, and drive innovation in enterprise applications.
  • Produce quality user documentation for defining integrations between enterprise-level applications.
  • Build web applications for manufacturing engineers for scheduling, dispatching, redlining, and issue resolution.
  • Adopt DevOps practices; containerize edge and cloud services; automate deployments across environments; ensure observability and reliability.
  • Identify feature gaps between enterprise systems and develop remediation plans.
  • Share knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering standard methodologies.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Information Science, Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering, or related field; or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience with a front-end web technology such as React, Vue, Angular, OR similar
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles and the ability to translate domain expertise into applications.
  • Primary language proficiency in one of: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, or Java.
  • Proven development experience with React, Python, FastAPI, AWS, Spring Boot, and Node.js.
  • Experience with IoT Core, ELB, Lambda, CloudWatch, S3, Docker, EKS/ECS, Datadog, and Rancher/Kubernetes.
  • Experience in event-driven messaging/streaming (e.g., MQTT, Kafka, Kinesis).
  • Experience developing APIs and building production applications; strong SQL/database skills.
  • Cloud expertise (AWS, Azure, GCP); GitOps, IaC (Terraform/CloudFormation), container orchestration, and edge deployment strategies.
  • Solid understanding of version control systems and managing code/data/artifact lifecycles.
  • Strong collaboration, ownership, and communication skills; bias for delivering high-quality results.
  • Experience solving complex problems by leveraging AI tools and integrating AI-powered solutions into software development workflows.
  • Have an ability to take technical ownership, step in to help team members as needed, collaborate with team members to identify, and fix technical problems.

Desired:

  • Experience using code assistants such as Copilot or Aider.
  • Experience with serverless computing and event-driven architectures.
  • Familiarity with containerization tools (e.g., Docker or equivalent experience) and orchestration systems (e.g., Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with automation test frameworks such as Selenium, Cypress, Junit.
  • Understanding of ERP, MES, QMS, PLM, and other manufacturing software; integrating a complete digital thread.
  • Interest in developing innovative systems for manufacturing leveraging IIoT, AI/ML and data engineering.
