Job description

Our Mission
Our mission is to SAVE AND IMPROVE LIVES BY EMPOWERING HEALTHCARE CONSUMERS. Come be part of remarkable.
Overview
How You Can Make a Difference
The Manager, Software Engineering is a hands-on technical leader responsible for building, modernizing, and operating software solutions for HealthEquity's COBRA platform, a mission-critical legacy system in a regulated domain.
Reporting to a Director of Software Engineering, this role leads a blended team of onshore and offshore engineers, owns technical execution and delivery outcomes, and works in close partnership with Product, Architecture, Security, and Operations. The manager is accountable for both day-to-day platform stability and the definition and execution of a long-term technical modernization strategy, using Agentic AI as a required accelerator in alignment with HealthEquity's engineering productivity and modernization goals.
In this role, you will have a direct impact on the stability, evolution, and future of a mission-critical HealthEquity platform. You will help modernize a complex, regulated system while keeping it reliable for customers and partners, elevate how teams apply engineering rigor and AI-accelerated workflows, and develop engineers who will shape the long-term health of the platform. The COBRA platform is foundational to HealthEquity's business. This role is critical to maintaining platform stability, meeting regulatory obligations, and executing a responsible modernization strategy-while accelerating engineering effectiveness through disciplined use of Agentic AI.
What You'll Be Doing
You will lead a blended onshore and offshore engineering team, remain hands-on in technical decision-making, and turn business and regulatory requirements into clear, executable technical outcomes. You'll balance day-to-day platform operations with longer-term modernization efforts, embedding Agentic AI into how the team builds, tests, modernizes, and supports software.
Technical Leadership & Modernization Execution
  • Remain hands-on with system design, architecture, code reviews, and complex problem solving across the application stack.
  • Lead the technical modernization of the COBRA platform, balancing near-term regulatory and operational commitments with long-term architectural health.
  • Define, sequence, and execute a pragmatic modernization roadmap, applying incremental modernization patterns while maintaining production stability.
  • Ensure engineering practices meet HealthEquity standards for code quality, security, performance, test automation, and maintainability.
  • Oversee the design and governance of data warehouse solutions that support COBRA platform reporting, compliance, and operational analytics needs.
  • Lead the evaluation, optimization, and modernization of SSIS/SSRS/ETL jobs, ensuring reliable, auditable data movement across source systems, staging layers, and reporting environments.
  • This role is well suited for a Principal or Staff Engineer ready to step into people leadership for the right reasons-to multiply impact through teams, steward complex systems, and drive sustainable platform evolution.

Agentic AI as an Engineering Accelerator (Required)
  • Embed Agentic AI into software development and support workflows to accelerate:
    • Legacy code comprehension and documentation
    • Test design, automation, and maintenance
    • Refactoring and modernization efforts
    • Production support, incident analysis, and defect resolution
  • Ensure AI usage is secure, compliant, auditable, and aligned with enterprise governance.
  • Set expectations that AI is a force multiplier for disciplined engineers, not a substitute for sound technical judgment or accountability.

Team Leadership, Delivery & Capacity Management
  • Lead, coach, and develop a hybrid onshore and offshore engineering team, establishing clear roles, ownership boundaries, and performance expectations.
  • Own sprint execution, capacity planning, and throughput, ensuring effective utilization of internal teams and vendor partners.
  • Provide clear technical direction, unblock delivery risks, pressure-test estimates, and ensure predictable execution against commitments.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, technical rigor, continuous improvement, and professional growth.

Operational Excellence & Production Accountability
  • Maintain shared accountability for production stability, availability, and performance of COBRA platform.
  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and post-incident reviews, ensuring corrective actions are identified and implemented.
  • Ensure operational readiness, monitoring, documentation, and support handoffs meet HealthEquity standards.
  • Balance delivery velocity with operational risk management in a regulated environment.

Cross-Functional Partnership & Communication
  • Partner closely with Product and Business stakeholders to align technical plans with business priorities and regulatory obligations.
  • Collaborate with Architecture, Security, and Compliance to ensure solutions align with enterprise standards and risk policies.
  • Communicate progress, risks, tradeoffs, and outcomes clearly to leadership and stakeholders.

What You Will Need to Be Successful
To succeed in this role, you'll need strong technical depth, pragmatic leadership instincts, and comfort operating in ambiguity. Success requires the ability to work across geography, make informed tradeoffs in a legacy environment, hold teams accountable for delivery and stability, and consistently look for ways to accelerate outcomes through disciplined use of modern engineering practices and AI.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including hands-on work in complex or legacy systems.
  • 2+ years in a technical leadership role (Engineering Manager, Tech Lead, Principal Engineer, or Staff Engineer).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams while remaining technically credible and engaged.
  • Experience working effectively with globally distributed and offshore delivery teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Background as a Principal or Staff Engineer transitioning into people leadership.
  • Experience modernizing legacy, regulated platforms (financial services, benefits administration, insurance, healthcare).
  • Strong experience with enterprise application stacks (e.g., .NET, Java, relational databases, batch and integration patterns).
  • Practical experience applying AI-assisted or agent-based development practices in real engineering environments.
  • Experience with data warehouse architecture and data modeling in support of regulated reporting and operational analytics.
  • Proficiency with SSIS for enterprise data integration, including design of complex ETL workflows, error handling strategies, and deployment across environments.
  • Experience building and maintaining SSRS reports and data sources in an enterprise setting, with an understanding of report performance, security, and lifecycle management.
  • Familiarity with ETL modernization approaches, including assessment of legacy SSIS workloads for migration to cloud-based or modern integration platforms.

Leadership Profile - What Success Looks Like
A successful Manager, Software Engineering at HealthEquity:
  • Leads through technical credibility, accountability, and care for people and systems.
  • Is comfortable moving between code-level detail and platform-level strategy.
  • Makes informed tradeoffs, communicates them clearly, and owns outcomes.
  • Treats modernization and AI adoption as ongoing responsibilities, not one-time initiatives.
