What is a solutions consultant?

A solutions consultant has in-depth technical knowledge that can help a business overcome issues, increase sales, and connect better with their customer base. As a solutions consultant, you may work with a management team on strategy or focus on a specific sales-related project with the sales department within the company. This career requires sales experience and strong analytical problem-solving skills. Your job duties could include working with a marketing team to increase sales via social media networks or planning how to cut operations costs with the accounting department.

What is a solutions consultant?

A Solutions Consultant is a professional who works with clients to understand their business needs and recommend technology or service solutions that address those requirements. They act as a bridge between the sales, technical, and customer teams, ensuring that proposed solutions fit the client's goals and are technically feasible. Solutions Consultants often participate in product demonstrations, develop proposals, and provide expertise throughout the sales process. Their role requires strong communication, technical, and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solutions consultant?

To excel as a Solutions Consultant, you need a solid understanding of technical product knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and often a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with CRM systems, cloud platforms, and relevant certifications like Salesforce or AWS is typically required. Excellent communication, active listening, and relationship-building are vital soft skills for effectively addressing client needs and conveying complex solutions. These skills are crucial for bridging the gap between technical offerings and client requirements, ensuring successful solution implementation and customer satisfaction.

Solutions Consultants and Sales Engineers both support sales processes with technical expertise. Solutions Consultants focus on understanding client needs and demonstrating solutions, often emphasizing business value. Sales Engineers typically provide technical product details and support during sales, with a stronger technical emphasis. While their roles overlap, Solutions Consultants tend to have a broader focus on solution design and client engagement, whereas Sales Engineers concentrate on technical validation and product specifics.

How does a solutions consultant typically collaborate with sales and technical teams during the sales cycle?

As a Solutions Consultant, you play a crucial role in bridging the gap between sales and technical teams. You'll work closely with sales representatives to understand client needs, then partner with engineers or product specialists to design tailored solutions and demonstrations. This collaboration often involves participating in client meetings, clarifying technical requirements, and ensuring proposed solutions can be effectively implemented. Strong communication and project management skills are key, as you'll be responsible for translating complex technical concepts into value-driven business solutions.

Job description

The Company
Versaterm is a PE-backed, high-growth SaaS company building a fully integrated platform across the entire public safety ecosystem - dispatch, law enforcement, forensics, courts, and beyond. We've grown through strategic acquisitions and deep product investment. What connects all of it is a single purpose: give public safety agencies the tools and insights to make better decisions in high-stakes moments.
When a 911 call is answered, a detective investigates a case, or a forensic lab processes evidence, there's a good chance our software is working behind the scenes. That's been true for over four decades.
AI is central to where we're going. Not as a feature but as core infrastructure. We're embedding intelligence directly into the workflows our customers rely on every day, and we're doing it alongside them. Our customers tell us what the mission demands. We build what answers it.
This work attracts a specific kind of person - someone who wants to be pushed by great people, build things that outlast a sprint cycle, and go home knowing the work connected back to something real.
The Role
The Solutions Consultant supports sales teams during the pre-sales phase by providing deep product knowledge and solution development for one or more enterprise SaaS products within Versaterm's public safety software portfolio. The Solutions Consultant is accountable for accurate solution representation, demo readiness and contributing to deal progression through MEDDPICC-aligned qualification and Challenger-based commercial insights, while ensuring solution feasibility and effective transition of solution intent into post-sales delivery.
What You Do
  • Support sales teams throughout the pre-sales cycle by applying product expertise to customer discovery and solution development.
  • Translate customer operational requirements into solution narratives aligned to assigned product(s).
  • Contribute to deal strategy discussions by identifying solution strengths, limitations, and configuration considerations.
  • Support qualification and opportunity progression in alignment with established sales methodologies.
  • Prepare, configure, and deliver high-impact product demonstrations for prospects, customers, and internal sales audiences.
  • Leverage AI tools and emerging technologies to enhance solution discovery, demo preparation, proposal development, and customer engagement.
  • Tailor demonstrations to customer use cases, workflows, and evaluation criteria.
  • Ensure demonstrations accurately reflect product functionality, roadmap commitments, and implementation expectations.
  • Maintain demo environments, data, and scripts for assigned product lines.
  • Maintain current, working knowledge of assigned enterprise SaaS products, including features, integrations, and deployment considerations.
  • Stay informed on product updates, enhancements, and positioning to ensure accurate customer representation.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to the product team on feature requests, workflow gaps, and user insights.
  • Support the development of technically accurate and compliant RFP/RFI responses.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Computer Science, Public Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5-7+ years of experience in solutions consulting, pre-sales, sales engineering, or a related customer-facing role.
  • Experience supporting enterprise SaaS products, preferably in public safety, government, or other regulated environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage pre-sales responsibilities for assigned products.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong AI literacy, including familiarity with generative AI, copilots, and AI-assisted workflows, with the ability to confidently demonstrate AI-enabled product capabilities and translate technical concepts into clear business outcomes.
  • Solid understanding of SaaS solution concepts, customer workflows, and implementation considerations.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across functions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple opportunities concurrently.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Note: Due to the nature of our work with public safety agencies, this position requires compliance with the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy. Candidates must successfully pass a comprehensive, fingerprint-based background check. Please note that specific customer contracts may impose additional security verification requirements. Obtaining and maintaining all required security clearances is a condition of employment. For more information on CJIS security requirements, please visit the FBI's CJIS Security Policy Resource Center.
Versaterm is committed to fair and equitable compensation that is competitive, consistent, and aligned with the value each role contributes to our organization. The starting salary for this position will be dependent upon many factors, such as the successful candidate's skills, experience, education, training as well as internal equity, market data, and business needs. In addition to base salary and our comprehensive benefits offering, some roles may also be eligible for variable compensation such as incentive plans or discretionary performance bonuses.
AI is central to how Versaterm builds and delivers solutions for our customers. Within Talent Acquisition, we use AI-enabled tools to support certain aspects of the recruitment process, helping our team work more efficiently and spend more time connecting with great talent. AI supports our work, but all hiring and employment decisions are made by people.
Versaterm is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and a barrier-free workplace. Accommodations are available upon request throughout all stages of the recruitment process and apply to the terms and conditions of employment. For more information, please contact info@versaterm.com.
