What is a sales engineer?

Sales Engineers are professionals who combine technical knowledge of products or services with strong sales skills to provide solutions to customers. They work closely with both the sales and engineering teams to understand customer needs, demonstrate products, and explain the technical benefits. Sales Engineers often assist with product design and customization, and help customers understand how a product or service can solve their specific problems. Their role typically involves both pre-sales and post-sales support, making them key to building strong customer relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Engineer, you need a strong combination of technical knowledge in engineering or a related field and proven sales acumen, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, as well as proficiency in technical presentation tools and product-specific certifications, is typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to build client relationships are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications enable Sales Engineers to effectively bridge the gap between customer needs and technical solutions, driving both client satisfaction and business growth.

What does a sales engineer do?

As a sales engineer, your responsibilities are to serve as a technical advisor to prospective clients. Your duties may include helping customers decide what to buy for a project, demonstrating the use of products, providing instruction and support, and even performing installations. Companies typically ask sales engineers to sell complex technological or scientific products, which requires extensive knowledge of the parts and functions of each product, as well as related processes. You may also be asked to travel on a regular basis, present information to large crowds, or work irregular hours to meet sales goals and the needs of clients.

How do sales engineers typically collaborate with both technical teams and clients during the sales process?

Sales Engineers act as a vital bridge between technical teams and clients, often working closely with product managers, engineers, and sales representatives. They translate complex technical information into clear, client-friendly solutions and ensure that client requirements are accurately communicated to internal teams. This collaboration involves participating in product demonstrations, technical presentations, and solution design meetings. By fostering effective communication between stakeholders, Sales Engineers help tailor offerings to client needs and drive successful sales outcomes.

Job description

Sales Engineer
Location: South Bend, IN
Travel: U.S. & Canada, with occasional international travel
About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Sales Engineer to join a global manufacturing organization in South Bend, Indiana. This is a highly customer-facing role combining technical sales, account management, customer support, and business development.
This is not a high-volume, transactional sales position. You'll work with an established customer base, developing strong relationships, understanding customer applications and technical requirements, and serving as a key connection between customers and internal engineering, quality, operations, and commercial teams.
We are looking for someone who is technically capable but equally strong with people. You do not need to come in knowing our products. We have a structured training process and expect the person in this role to spend significant time learning our manufacturing processes, capabilities, and applications before operating independently in the field.
What You'll Do
  • Manage and develop relationships with existing customers throughout the U.S. and Canada.
  • Serve as a technical and commercial resource for customers, helping address application questions, product requirements, quality concerns, and other needs.
  • Understand customer specifications and technical requirements and translate them into solutions.
  • Develop and present technical recommendations, value propositions, proposals, quotations, and feasibility assessments.
  • Lead and participate in customer meetings, presentations, and commercial discussions.
  • Partner closely with Engineering, Quality, Operations, Planning, and Sales to ensure customer requirements are understood and addressed.
  • Support customers through product development, qualification, and implementation.
  • Follow up on inbound opportunities and help identify opportunities to expand existing relationships.
  • Over time, identify new markets, applications, and business opportunities through industry networking, trade shows, and direct customer engagement.
  • Maintain strong communication and responsiveness across multiple customer relationships and internal priorities.

These responsibilities closely reflect the company's formal definition of the role, including understanding technical requirements, developing solutions and recommendations, leading customer meetings, preparing proposals, and coordinating across internal functions.
What We're Looking For
This role could be a strong fit for someone currently working as a Sales Engineer, Technical Sales Engineer, Applications Engineer, Account Manager, Business Development Manager, or in another customer-facing technical position.
The ideal candidate will bring:
  • Previous experience in technical sales, engineering, account management, applications, or a related industrial/manufacturing environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build credibility and lasting customer relationships.
  • A commercial mindset and the ability to recognize opportunities that create value for both the customer and the business.
  • Technical aptitude and a genuine interest in understanding how products are manufactured and applied.
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple accounts, projects, and priorities while remaining responsive to customers.
  • Willingness to spend meaningful time in the South Bend facility developing hands-on product and manufacturing knowledge.
  • Ability to travel throughout the U.S. and Canada, potentially up to approximately two weeks per month depending on customer needs.
  • Flexibility for occasional international travel.

About Avero

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

In 1997, while working as the CFO of an NYC restaurant group, Avero founder Damian Mogavero, was frustrated with his management team’s inability to answer basic questions about the restaurants’ performance. He wanted a better way to extract the data already being collected by the POS and to enable operators to use it to make better, faster, and more profitable decisions. In 2002, Avero was born. Today, Avero has offices in Dallas, Las Vegas, Boulder, and NYC and is used by over 43,000 operators in 75 countries. And we always stay true to our mission: innovating technology to empower hospitality operators with the answers they need to transform their businesses and their lives.
