What is a Learning Coach?

A Learning Coach is an individual who provides support, guidance, and motivation to students as they navigate their educational journey. Learning Coaches often help with goal setting, time management, and study skills, working closely with students to identify and overcome learning obstacles. They can work in various settings, including online schools, tutoring centers, or private practice, and may collaborate with teachers and parents to ensure student success. Learning Coaches play a key role in fostering independence and confidence in learners.

What Is a Learning Coach?

A learning coach assists students enrolled in an online education program. Their role is not necessarily teaching, but rather coaching the students on how to get the most from their online education. As a learning coach, your job duties include assisting with daily lessons, monitoring how well the student comprehends the curriculum, and coordinating with the online instructional staff. The amount of time you spend with a student varies depending on whether they are learning an elementary, middle or high school level curriculum.

What is the difference between Learning Coach vs Tutor?

AspectLearning CoachTutor
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree; certifications in education or coaching are a plusOften requires a bachelor's degree; certifications vary by subject
Work EnvironmentOnline or in-person, supporting student development and motivationUsually one-on-one or small group instruction, often subject-specific
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in schools, online education platforms, and homeschooling supportCommon in tutoring centers, private tutoring, and academic support services

Learning Coaches focus on guiding students through learning strategies, motivation, and overall academic growth, often in a broader developmental role. Tutors primarily provide subject-specific instruction to improve skills and understanding. While both roles support student success, Learning Coaches tend to have a more holistic approach, whereas Tutors focus on specific content mastery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Learning Coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Learning Coach, you need a solid background in education, instructional strategies, and learner assessment, often supported by a teaching degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), digital collaboration tools, and educational software is typically required. Exceptional communication, active listening, and motivational skills help build trust and encourage student growth. These skills are crucial for guiding learners effectively, personalizing support, and fostering a positive, productive learning environment.

How does a Learning Coach typically support students' progress and motivation throughout a course?

A Learning Coach plays a key role in guiding students by providing personalized feedback, helping them set achievable goals, and regularly checking in on their progress. This support often involves one-on-one meetings, tracking academic milestones, and identifying any obstacles students may face. Learning Coaches also collaborate with teachers and parents to develop strategies that keep students engaged and motivated, ensuring that each learner receives the encouragement and resources they need to succeed.

Job description

About KaiPod Learning
KaiPod Learning brings together small groups (pods) of 10-12 students who live nearby and are enrolled in online or homeschool programs. We provide a safe, structured, and engaging in-person environment where students can thrive socially and academically, while parents gain peace of mind. At the heart of each pod is a KaiPod Learning Coach.

Position Overview
KaiPod Learning Coaches create learning spaces where students are safe, supported, focused, and excited to learn. They serve as mentors, academic guides, enrichment facilitators, and trusted partners to families. Unlike a traditional teacher, a KaiPod Coach tailors support to each student's individual learning program-fostering academic growth, personal responsibility, and curiosity through daily interactions.

What Makes This Role Unique

In some ways, you'll feel like a teacher:

  • You'll build meaningful relationships with students and their families.
  • You'll support academic growth and guide enrichment activities.
  • You'll help shape a positive, inclusive culture in your pod.

But in many ways, this is not a traditional classroom role:

  • Students follow their own online school or homeschool curriculum.
  • Your role is to personalize their experience-through goal-setting, coaching, executive functioning support, and social facilitation.
  • You have more autonomy to make learning joyful-planning field trips, hosting theme days, launching clubs, and more.

Primary Responsibilities

Build a Thriving Pod Culture

  • Create an inclusive, positive, and safe environment where students enjoy learning and socializing
  • Facilitate daily enrichment activities and encourage student voice and collaboration
  • Support students in developing essential life skills, like communication, problem-solving, and empathy

Guide Academic Growth

  • Understand each student's academic program, strengths, and needs
  • Provide on-demand academic help and executive functioning support
  • Set and track academic goals with students and families
  • Use tools like Newton to document progress and maintain transparency

Partner with Families

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families
  • Share weekly updates and insights into each student's progress and experience
  • Build trust and community through clear communication, empathy, and responsiveness

Lead Locally, Collaborate Nationally

  • Represent KaiPod in your community and grow your local network
  • Occasionally attend local events to build partnerships and increase pod visibility
  • Capture and share the magic happening in your pod with families and the broader KaiPod team

Who You Are

An Outstanding Learning Coach

  • Deeply knows and motivates students
  • Familiar with academic standards and core content areas (ELA, math, science, social studies)
  • Skilled in supporting executive functioning and neurodiverse learners
  • Tech-savvy and comfortable navigating multiple online platforms
  • Experience teaching 3rd-6th grade or leading small group instruction preferred

A Natural Culture Builder

  • Creates environments where kids feel safe, connected, and excited to learn
  • Plans and delivers engaging enrichment activities tailored to student interests
  • Communicates proactively and professionally with families
  • Organized and detail-oriented with a strong sense of initiative

A Local Leader and Connector

  • Connected (or eager to connect) to your local homeschool or parent community
  • Willing to share about KaiPod and represent your pod at community events
  • Passionate about building strong relationships with families and students

A Strong Team Member

  • Open to feedback and committed to personal growth
  • Proactive, solution-oriented, and flexible in a dynamic startup environment

Employment Type: FULL_TIME
