Compensation Range:
: $19.00 - $19.00
Position Summary
Student employees are in part-time positions hired for short-term projects not to exceed one thousand (1,000) hours per year. Unless otherwise stated or as prescribed by law, National University does not provide student employees with benefits including accrued sick and vacation, health and life insurance, or other benefits. Student employee positions are available to the following.
  • Students enrolled and attending courses
  • Undergraduate and graduate students in any school or program
  • Full-time or part-time students

Graduate Assistants are responsible for providing virtual academic assistance to students in a variety of forms, including synchronous and asynchronous individual sessions, research labs, and ASC Chat. Graduate assistants will work closely with faculty to identify student learning needs and to establish research labs that are designed to support students in mastering course or program content. Graduate Assistants assist students in building skills across key academic areas such as writing, study strategies, research, and mastering discipline-specific content. Graduate Assistants will identify the student's unique learning strengths and promote self-confidence and independence. Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
This Graduate Assistant position does not include or imply eligibility for educational or tuition benefits.
Essential Functions:
  • Assist students in understanding discipline-specific material, improving study techniques, and developing their academic writing, organization, and critical thinking skills.
  • Assist students in understanding writing guidelines.
  • Provide synchronous one-to-one and small group sessions.
  • Host content-specific research labs developed in collaboration with faculty.
  • Work closely with faculty to stay informed of course or discipline needs.
  • Assist students in understanding key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom.
  • Assist students in becoming autonomous, self-directed learners.
  • Provide post-session feedback to students.
  • Maintain records of student contact.
  • Help students identify their learning strengths and weaknesses and connect them with the necessary resources to aid in success.
  • Develop academic resources to include video tutorials and lessons on assigned topics.
  • Support the mission of the Academic Success Center (ASC) within National University.
  • Participate in required training, coaching, and other activities that promote high-quality student support.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Academic Success Center (ASC) Director and/or Associate Director.
  • Reasonable and consistent attendance to fulfill the requirements of the position.

Requirements:
Education & Experience:
  • Enrollment in a graduate program at National University or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in [Subject Area(s) of focus], with a strong academic record.
  • Must provide two recommendations from faculty or school leadership. Must include the faculty member who will provide content-specific guidance.
  • Must have a GPA of at least 3.0
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas clearly and effectively.
  • Prior experience in mentoring, tutoring, or teaching preferred
  • A commitment to supporting student learning and academic success in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Experience in an online learning environment is required.
  • Experience working with online students preferred.
  • Experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred.

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
  • Experience in collaborative relationship building.
  • Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for students.
  • Ability to work in an online environment.
  • Skill in operating equipment, such as personal computer.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and other applications in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to participate as an active team member of the team and organization and work toward a common goal.

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate's qualifications, skills, and competencies.
