What is a marketing operations manager?

A marketing operations manager supervises marketing department staff to maintain productivity and smooth operations. Unlike a marketing project manager who focuses on a particular marketing campaign, a marketing operations manager oversees the overall marketing department and ensures the staff meets their goals. Job duties include evaluating market trends to develop new marketing strategies, creating department goals, delegating project tasks to employees, and training new marketing employees. Qualifications for this career include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in marketing, business administration, or a related field, extensive marketing experience, and leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a marketing operations manager?

To thrive as a Marketing Operations Manager, you need expertise in marketing strategy, data analysis, project management, and a bachelor’s degree in marketing or a related field. Familiarity with marketing automation platforms (like HubSpot or Marketo), CRM systems, and analytics tools is typically required, along with certifications such as Salesforce or Google Analytics. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help drive cross-functional collaboration and process optimization. These skills ensure seamless marketing execution, data-driven decision-making, and alignment between marketing initiatives and overall business objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by marketing operations managers when aligning marketing technology with organizational goals?

Marketing Operations Managers often encounter challenges when ensuring that marketing technology stacks effectively support broader business objectives. Integrating new tools with existing systems, maintaining data accuracy across platforms, and securing buy-in from cross-functional teams can be complex. Additionally, staying updated with rapidly evolving marketing technologies while balancing cost and utility requires ongoing attention. Successful Marketing Operations Managers proactively communicate with stakeholders, regularly evaluate tech performance, and foster a culture of continuous improvement to address these hurdles.

Marketing Operations Manager
Summary
Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence division is seeking a Marketing Operations Manager to join our Global Marketing Operations team. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role that will serve as a key partner to the Director of Global Marketing Operations and help keep our global marketing organization, technology, and programs running effectively.
The Marketing Operations Manager will own the day-to-day administration of Hexagon's marketing technology stack, manage multiple marketing operations projects, oversee external contractors and consultants, and partner across Marketing, Sales, IT, and Web to drive operational excellence.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, is comfortable moving between strategic initiatives and tactical execution, and takes pride in bringing structure, organization, and accountability to complex projects and systems.
About Hexagon
At Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, we empower industrial manufacturers to develop the disruptive technologies of today and the life-changing products of tomorrow. Our portfolio of advanced sensors, measurement technologies, factory automation, simulation, and analytics solutions enables precision, productivity, quality, and sustainability across manufacturing environments worldwide.
Joining Hexagon means becoming part of a global organization focused on innovation, collaboration, and helping manufacturers solve some of their most complex challenges.
Why Join Us?
  • Join a global leader in manufacturing technology and industrial intelligence.
  • Take ownership of a broad and evolving global marketing technology ecosystem.
  • Work directly with the Director of Global Marketing Operations on high-visibility initiatives.
  • Gain exposure to projects spanning AI adoption, data infrastructure, global campaign operations, and major trade show execution.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Marketing, Sales, IT, Web, and regional teams around the world.
  • Make a direct impact on how efficiently and effectively our global marketing organization operates.

About the Role
As the Marketing Operations Manager, you will serve as an operational backbone for the global marketing organization. You will own the administration and ongoing optimization of our marketing technology platforms while ensuring integrations, processes, documentation, and governance remain reliable and scalable.
You will also manage external contractors and consultants, lead multiple marketing operations projects from kickoff through completion, and serve as a central point of coordination between Marketing and teams including Sales, IT, and Web.
This is a highly visible role on a lean, high-impact team where you will have the opportunity to both shape how we work and remain hands-on in execution.
What You'll Do
Marketing Technology & Platform Administration
  • Serve as the administrator and operational owner of Hexagon's marketing technology stack, including marketing automation, CRM-connected tools, conversational marketing and AI platforms, intent data, webinar, content, AI writing, project management, and landing page technologies.
  • Manage user provisioning, platform access, and license assignments.
  • Coordinate with technology vendors to add seats, manage renewals, troubleshoot issues, and support ongoing platform needs.
  • Own platform updates, release management, testing, and configuration changes while communicating relevant updates to stakeholders.
  • Maintain documentation, standard operating procedures, and governance standards for platform usage across regions.
  • Monitor system health, integrations, and data flows between platforms, including marketing automation and CRM synchronization.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the performance, usability, and scalability of the marketing technology ecosystem.

Contractor & Vendor Management
  • Manage relationships with external contractors, consultants, and agencies supporting marketing operations initiatives.
  • Scope projects and engagements, establish expectations, and track deliverables against statements of work.
  • Monitor timelines, budgets, and quality to ensure external partners meet agreed-upon commitments.
  • Onboard contractors into Hexagon systems, processes, and brand standards.
  • Manage contractor access, permissions, and offboarding as engagements conclude.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for day-to-day questions, deliverables, and escalations.

Project & Program Management
  • Manage multiple concurrent marketing operations projects from kickoff through delivery.
  • Lead initiatives related to campaign infrastructure, data, technology implementations, integrations, and process improvements.
  • Build and maintain project plans, timelines, milestones, dependencies, and action items.
  • Proactively identify risks, roadblocks, and resource needs and work with stakeholders to resolve them.
  • Provide regular project updates to stakeholders across Marketing, Sales, IT, Web, and other business functions.
  • Lead project check-ins, coordinate cross-functional activities, and manage escalations when needed.
  • Serve as the Marketing Operations point of contact for website-related projects and maintain enough familiarity with Sitecore to scope requests, establish priorities, and determine when marketing initiatives require Web support.

Marketing Processes & Operations
  • Document, standardize, and continuously improve Marketing Operations processes, playbooks, and SOPs.
  • Support lead management operations, including monitoring lead flow, routing rules, and data quality.
  • Identify operational gaps and opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency, and scalability across global marketing.
  • Support reporting and analytics requests, including dashboard maintenance and ad hoc data pulls.
  • Partner with regional and functional marketing teams to promote consistent processes and technology adoption.

What Success Looks Like
Within 90 days: You are confidently owning day-to-day marketing platform administration and license management and providing consistent status reporting for active contractor engagements.
Within 6 months: You are independently managing multiple Marketing Operations projects from kickoff through completion and have become a trusted operational resource for stakeholders across teams and regions.
Ongoing: Hexagon's marketing technology stack runs reliably, external partners deliver quality work on time and within budget, stakeholders have visibility into active initiatives, and projects continue moving forward without critical details falling through the cracks.
Qualifications
  • 4-7 years of experience in marketing operations, marketing technology, or a related B2B marketing role.
  • Hands-on administration experience with a marketing automation platform. Pardot/Account Engagement experience is strongly preferred; Marketo or HubSpot experience will also be considered.
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce and experience supporting integrations between marketing automation and CRM platforms.
  • Experience administering a broader marketing technology stack beyond marketing automation and CRM.
  • Exposure to technologies such as conversational marketing and AI tools, webinar platforms, intent data platforms, content tools, or similar marketing technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience managing external contractors, consultants, or agencies, including scoping work and holding partners accountable for deliverables.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience with project management platforms such as Monday.com, Asana, or similar tools.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Experience partnering with Marketing, Sales, IT, Web, and other business stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate project status, risks, and recommendations effectively to senior leaders.
  • Strong attention to detail and a process-driven, documentation-first approach.
  • Comfortable working within a lean team and balancing strategic thinking with hands-on execution.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies and platforms quickly.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Sitecore or another enterprise content management system.
  • Experience with intent data platforms such as 6sense.
  • Familiarity with conversational marketing or AI SDR platforms such as Qualified or Drift.
  • Experience with Power BI or similar business intelligence and reporting tools.
  • Experience working within B2B manufacturing, industrial technology, engineering, or a related technical industry.

Why This Role?
This position offers unusual breadth and visibility for a manager-level Marketing Operations role. You will work directly with the Director of Global Marketing Operations on initiatives spanning AI adoption, data infrastructure, global campaign operations, marketing technology, and major trade show execution.
You will have meaningful ownership from day one and the opportunity to directly influence how Hexagon's global marketing organization operates, scales, and adopts new technologies.
Work Environment
  • This position operates in a professional, collaborative, and fast-paced global business environment.
  • The role requires frequent use of a computer, marketing technology platforms, collaboration tools, and virtual meeting technologies.
  • Regular interaction with colleagues and stakeholders across multiple functions, regions, and time zones is expected.
  • The position requires the ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines while working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Occasional flexibility in working hours may be needed to support global teams, vendors, projects, or business initiatives.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.
