What are Legal Operations Project Managers?

Legal Operations Project Managers are professionals who oversee and coordinate projects within a legal department or law firm, focusing on improving processes, implementing technology, and managing budgets. They bridge the gap between legal teams and other business units by ensuring that legal services are delivered efficiently and cost-effectively. Their responsibilities often include project planning, vendor management, process optimization, and reporting on key metrics. These managers help legal departments operate more like business units by applying project management principles to legal work. They play a key role in driving innovation and operational excellence in the legal industry.

How does a Legal Operations Project Manager typically collaborate with legal and cross-functional teams within an organization?

A Legal Operations Project Manager frequently acts as a bridge between the legal department and other business units, such as IT, finance, and procurement. They coordinate project timelines, facilitate communication, and ensure legal projects align with broader organizational goals. Collaboration often involves leading meetings, gathering requirements, and managing stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of legal technology solutions or process improvements. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for streamlining workflows, boosting efficiency, and supporting the legal team's strategic objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Legal Operations Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Legal Operations Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, process optimization, and a solid understanding of legal workflows, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in business, law, or a related field. Familiarity with legal technology platforms such as contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems, e-billing tools, and project management software (e.g., Asana, Smartsheet) is essential, and certifications like PMP or Lean Six Sigma are valued. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure legal teams operate efficiently, deliver projects on time, and drive value within the organization.

Job description

As Sr Legal Operations Specialist, Legal Transformation, you will coordinate and support projects that improve how Honeywell's Corporate Legal function operates. Your work will span legal process optimization, communications, financial operations, project governance, and global operating model initiatives. Representative projects include building legal project governance routines, improving legal team communications, supporting annual operating planning, and creating reusable tools for legal teams. You will manage project planning, execution, stakeholder coordination, and delivery for Legal Transformation initiatives in partnership with Honeywell's legal function.

You will report to the Senior Director of Legal Operations and work from Honeywell's Charlotte, NC or Phoenix, AZ office on a hybrid schedule. The role may require occasional coordination across global time zones and limited travel for project, team, or leadership meetings. You will partner with Legal leadership, HR, Communications, Finance, IT, and business stakeholders to define project scope, manage execution, track risks, and communicate progress through completion. This role requires a project manager who can bring structure to initiatives, work effectively across functions, and support the execution of legal operations plans.

In this role, success means Legal Transformation initiatives have clear plans, visible accountability, timely decisions, and practical tools that help Honeywell's Legal function operate more effectively across global teams.

  • Develop and maintain project plans, timelines, resource models, budget inputs, risk and issue logs, status reports, and executive-ready materials
  • Maintain project governance routines, including meeting cadences, escalation paths, and executive review materials
  • Coordinate cross-functional workstreams across Legal, Finance, HR, Communications, IT, Procurement, and other functional teams to keep projects on track, resolve blockers, and prepare materials for leadership review
  • Track project progress against milestones, identify risks and issues early, escalate decisions when needed, and drive mitigation plans to closure
  • Track project metrics, adoption measures, and deliverable status to report on progress of Legal Transformation initiatives
  • Prepare concise project updates, dashboards, leadership summaries, and stakeholder communications that give legal leaders and cross-functional partners clear visibility into progress, risks, decisions, and next steps
  • Support change management and adoption activities for Legal Transformation initiatives, including stakeholder readiness, training logistics, communications, and adoption tracking
  • Facilitate post-project reviews, capture lessons learned, and convert them into reusable templates, playbooks, and process improvements for the Legal function
  • Partner with Communications and HR to manage Legal communications channels and routines, including Viva Engage, the quarterly Extended Leadership Team meeting, and Legal's internal intranet presence
  • Partner with Finance and budget owners to support Legal financial operations, including subscription management, spend tracking, and support for the annual operating plan
  • Support legal and business stakeholders in maintaining and improving legal processes, including standard workflows, governance routines, and implementation tracking
  • Provide project management guidance to legal team members on planning, accountability, risk management, and effective status reporting
  • Develop and improve project management resources, including templates, playbooks, dashboards, meeting routines, and reporting tools that help the Legal function execute projects consistently

CORE SKILLS

  • Project planning and execution
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Stakeholder management
  • Change management
