Job description

Exhibition and Art Collection Curator
University Libraries
JOB SUMMARY:
The Exhibition and Art Collection Curator will organize and curate exhibitions in each of the University exhibition spaces (The Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Gallery in the Harley University Center, the Lovely Gallery in Swirbul Library and the Performance Arts Center Galleries), including all appropriate administrative, outreach, marketing, and documentation functions. The curator will periodically meet with the Art Council to discuss relative matters pertaining to the permanent art collection and the exhibition program. This role will work with academic programs to develop engaging experiential and professional learning opportunities that enhance the educational experience for students.
Additionally, the curator will assist in maintaining the integrity of the permanent art collection and ensuring it aligns with the university's mission and goals. The incumbent will be responsible for the stewardship, documentation and research, development and care of Adelphi University's permanent art collection. This responsibility includes the maintenance of the art collection catalog, safe storage of works, condition reporting, prioritization of conservation needs, and appropriate display in university buildings. The incumbent will ensure focused growth of the collection, through strategic acquisitions and will identify objects for deaccession that do not meet the standards of the collection.
The anticipated start date for this position is the beginning of September.
SALARY INFORMATION:
In compliance with New York's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000 - $75,000. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. An annual base salary higher than the range may be warranted in circumstances where a candidate has demonstrable equivalent prior higher education experience at another University.

REPORTS TO: University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  1. Management of the University Galleries which includes supervising the schedule, budget and part-time student workers associated with gallery operations.
  2. Monitor the exhibition-making process from conception to installation and de-installation; prepare exhibition checklists; generate and maintain schedules and timelines.
  3. Liaise with the academic programs, in particular the Art and Art History department and the Museum Studies program, developing experiential learning opportunities for AU students in relation to exhibition programming.
  4. Design, copy-edit and produce interpretive and promotional materials including wall didactics, brochures, press releases, and content for websites and social media platforms.
  5. Plan and organize events (eg. Lectures, discussions, alumni relations, programs) related to the art collection and exhibitions.
  6. Train and supervise student exhibition assistants.
  7. Maintain accurate records and documentation pertaining to the art collection and its provenance for insurance purposes.
  8. Stay current regarding laws and best practices associated with the objects in the collection.
  9. Chair the Art Council which will meet at least once a year to solicit feedback from other departments on the gallery schedule and events associated with exhibitions.
  10. Deal with enquiries from researchers, students and the university community relating to the art collection.
  11. Assist with marketing and fundraising efforts.
  12. Oversee the maintenance and cataloging of art collection, as well as developing policies for its maintenance, development, exhibition, and preservation/conservation.
  13. Propose acquisitions for the permanent art collection and items for deaccessioning.
  14. Seek out internal and external funding to support exhibition programming and operations.
  15. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: (Knowledge, skills and abilities)
  1. Deep working knowledge of exhibition design, installation, presentation and care of artwork.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of current standards and best practices for exhibitions and collection management
  3. Ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of stakeholders.
  4. Excellent communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Must be able to perform all physical duties associated with the reception, packing and installation of artwork.
  2. Must be able to lift 40 lbs. minimum.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Bachelor's degree is required.
  2. Master's degree is preferred or equivalent experience in gallery or museum administration and/or exhibition installation.
  3. Experience in a museum or gallery setting with demonstrable knowledge of current issues in curatorial practices as related to acquisitions, management and conservation.
