What does a catering job do?

A catering job involves preparing, serving, and delivering food and beverages for events such as parties, weddings, or corporate functions. Workers may set up tables, serve guests, and ensure food presentation meets quality standards, often requiring good customer service skills and knowledge of food safety. The role can include working in kitchens, event venues, or on-site locations with flexible hours depending on the event schedule.

What is the difference between Catering vs Food Service Worker?

AspectCateringFood Service Worker

Work EnvironmentEvent venues, private parties, corporate eventsRestaurants, cafeterias, fast food outlets
Employer & IndustryEvent planning companies, catering servicesRestaurants, food establishments, hospitality industry
Job FocusPreparing, serving, and managing food at eventsServing customers, food prep, maintaining cleanliness

While both catering and food service workers handle food, catering focuses on preparing and serving food at special events and requires event-specific skills and certifications. Food service workers typically work in restaurants or cafeterias, providing daily customer service. The roles overlap in food handling but differ in environment and scope.

What Is the Difference Between a Caterer and a Chef?

The main difference between a caterer and a chef is that a caterer works at private events rather than in a brick and mortar shop. Some caterers begin their careers as chefs and then change to catering full-time. However, there is no rule that you can’t be both. Many chefs run catering businesses on the side or vice versa. Additionally, many have similar training, including culinary or hospitality school. Caterers may also switch careers to become chefs.

What is catering?

Catering is a service that provides food and beverages for events, gatherings, or organizations, often including preparation, delivery, set-up, and sometimes service staff. Caterers work for a variety of occasions such as weddings, corporate events, parties, and conferences. The service can range from delivering prepared meals to full-service event planning, including menu design, table settings, and cleanup. Catering companies work closely with clients to customize menus and ensure dietary needs and preferences are met.

How much money can you make from catering?

Catering professionals' earnings vary based on experience, location, and the scale of events, with many earning between $15 and $30 per hour or more. Skilled caterers who manage large events or own their business can earn significantly higher incomes, especially with tips and additional services.

What is the best way to find catering jobs?

Catering jobs can be found through online job boards, catering company websites, and industry-specific staffing agencies. Networking within the hospitality industry and obtaining relevant certifications, such as food safety, can also improve job prospects. Applying directly to event venues and catering businesses is another effective approach.

What do you need to work in catering?

To work in catering, you typically need good communication skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and relevant experience or training in food service. Some positions may require food safety certifications or a valid food handler's permit. Physical stamina and flexibility with work hours are also important for catering roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Catering Professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in catering, you need strong organizational skills, food safety knowledge, and experience in culinary preparation, often backed by a relevant food handling certificate. Familiarity with catering management software, commercial kitchen equipment, and event planning tools is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help you excel in dynamic, client-focused environments. These skills ensure events run smoothly, client expectations are met, and food safety and quality standards are maintained.

What are some common challenges faced by catering professionals during large events, and how can they be addressed?

Catering professionals often encounter challenges such as managing last-minute changes to guest counts, accommodating dietary restrictions, and coordinating with multiple vendors or event planners. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, effective communication, and flexibility. Establishing clear protocols, maintaining open lines of communication with clients and team members, and preparing contingency plans can help ensure events run smoothly and client expectations are met.

Job description

TSUNAMI CATERING – CATERING PRODUCTION COOK

Tsunami Catering is a high-volume catering company serving the Tri-Cities area, known for high-quality food, thoughtful execution, and a calm, professional kitchen culture.

We are seeking a dependable, organized, and team-oriented Catering Production Cook to help execute high-quality catering events for weddings, corporate events, conferences, and private celebrations.

This is not a traditional restaurant line cook position. We are looking for someone who enjoys consistency, organization, preparation, and producing excellent food while working within established recipes and systems.

The right person will help prepare and execute menu items, support large-scale event production, and contribute to maintaining an organized, efficient kitchen operation as our company continues to grow.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Prepare and cook menu items according to established recipes and standards

• Execute established recipes and prep plans with consistency

• Assist with large-scale event production

• Follow written recipes, prep lists, and kitchen procedures

• Help maintain organization and kitchen flow during production

• Support prep coordination during high-volume production days

• Assist with packaging, labeling, and event preparation

• Uphold presentation, garnish, and food quality standards

• Maintain cleanliness, food safety, and kitchen organization standards

• Work within established systems and direction

• Assist with maintaining recipe consistency and kitchen organization as the company continues to grow

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• Strong cooking and food preparation skills

• Catering, banquet, restaurant, or production kitchen experience preferred

• Ability to follow recipes and instructions consistently

• Organized, detail-oriented, and dependable

• Positive attitude and team mindset

• Confident, coachable, and team-oriented

• Comfortable working independently when needed

• Able to stay calm and organized during high-volume production

• Reliable transportation, attendance, and punctuality

WHO WILL THRIVE HERE

• Someone who enjoys creating consistency rather than constantly reinventing things

• Someone who takes pride in doing things the right way

• Someone who enjoys helping build systems that make a business stronger

• Someone who enjoys preparation, organization, and thoughtful execution

• Someone who wants to be part of a growing company with long-term opportunities

WHO MAY NOT BE A FIT

• Someone looking to immediately redesign menus or operate independently as an Executive Chef

• Someone who struggles with following established systems and procedures

• Someone seeking a traditional restaurant line cook or executive chef position

SCHEDULE & PAY

• Part-time role (approximately 20 hours per week to start)

• Most prep occurs during the day; events are primarily on weekends

• Some weekends are busier than others, with occasional lighter weekends

• Starting wage approximately $23–$25 per hour depending on experience and qualifications

• Growth opportunities available as the company continues to expand

ABOUT TSUNAMI CATERING

If you enjoy great food, strong teamwork, and helping build something meaningful, we'd love to hear from you.
