What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Engineer, you need a strong combination of technical knowledge in engineering or a related field and proven sales acumen, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, as well as proficiency in technical presentation tools and product-specific certifications, is typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to build client relationships are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications enable Sales Engineers to effectively bridge the gap between customer needs and technical solutions, driving both client satisfaction and business growth.

What is a sales engineer?

Sales Engineers are professionals who combine technical knowledge of products or services with strong sales skills to provide solutions to customers. They work closely with both the sales and engineering teams to understand customer needs, demonstrate products, and explain the technical benefits. Sales Engineers often assist with product design and customization, and help customers understand how a product or service can solve their specific problems. Their role typically involves both pre-sales and post-sales support, making them key to building strong customer relationships.

What does a sales engineer do?

As a sales engineer, your responsibilities are to serve as a technical advisor to prospective clients. Your duties may include helping customers decide what to buy for a project, demonstrating the use of products, providing instruction and support, and even performing installations. Companies typically ask sales engineers to sell complex technological or scientific products, which requires extensive knowledge of the parts and functions of each product, as well as related processes. You may also be asked to travel on a regular basis, present information to large crowds, or work irregular hours to meet sales goals and the needs of clients.

How do sales engineers typically collaborate with both technical teams and clients during the sales process?

Sales Engineers act as a vital bridge between technical teams and clients, often working closely with product managers, engineers, and sales representatives. They translate complex technical information into clear, client-friendly solutions and ensure that client requirements are accurately communicated to internal teams. This collaboration involves participating in product demonstrations, technical presentations, and solution design meetings. By fostering effective communication between stakeholders, Sales Engineers help tailor offerings to client needs and drive successful sales outcomes.

Job description

Sales Engineer
About Electra:
At Electra, we're building the EL9 - a nine-passenger, hybrid-electric aircraft that takes off and lands in 150 feet. Our Ultra Short technology unlocks thousands of new operating locations and enables what we call Direct Aviation: quiet, point-to-point regional travel that gets people from where they are to where they want to go, without the congestion of major airports or the noise of conventional aviation.
A global company, headquartered in Manassas, VA, Electra is backed by Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, and Safran, has filed for FAA Part 23 type certification, and carries 2,000+ intent to purchase from operators worldwide. We're a team of ~100 people moving fast toward first EL9 test flights in 2027 and certification by late 2029 or 2030. Every hire matter at this stage - and this role is no exception.
The Role:
Electra.aero is seeking an experienced Sales Engineer to develop and own Electra's performance and operating economics sales tools and to lead customer-specific use-case analysis in support of aircraft sales and early deployments.
This role is responsible for translating engineering outputs - including aircraft performance, fuel and energy burn, operating cost, noise footprint, and takeoff and landing capability - into fast, credible, and customer-ready analysis tools that support repeatable sales execution. The Sales Engineer will run detailed mission and fleet-level analyses for customers and work closely with customer fleet-planning teams to evaluate how Ultra Short aircraft integrate into existing and future networks.
This role interfaces closely with Electra's commercial sales team, network analysis lead, and product development team, and ensures consistent, technically credible representation of Electra's capabilities across markets.
What You'll Do:
Performance & Operating Cost Tool Ownership-
-Own and maintain Electra's customer-facing performance and operating-cost tools, derived from engineering models and validated assumptions.-Enable rapid analysis of:
  • Mission performance across payload, range, and environmental conditions-Takeoff and landing distances, obstacle clearance, and site feasibility
  • Energy and fuel burn for hybrid-electric operations-Direct operating costs, utilization sensitivity, and key cost drivers
  • Noise footprint and community-impact considerations

-Ensure traceability, documentation, and appropriate usage of tools across the commercial organization.
-Standardize analysis workflows and templates to enable repeatable, scalable use across markets.
-Incorporate feedback from sales teams and customers to improve usability, speed, and relevance of tools.
-Work closely with aircraft performance, systems, and safety engineering teams to reflect model updates and refined assumptions.
Customer Use-Case Analysis & Sales Support
  • Run detailed mission- and fleet-level analyses for customers exploring deployment of Ultra Short aircraft.
  • Engage directly with customer fleet planning and operations teams to evaluate how Electra's EL9 aircraft integrates into existing and future networks.
  • Serve as technical lead in customer discussions, using tools to support data-driven decisions.
  • Support preparation of performance and economic inputs for sales meetings and proposals.
  • Provide technical credibility during customer diligence, demonstrations, and early operational planning.
  • Align with commercial sales to prioritize opportunities, standardize analyses, and support efficient sales cycles.

What You Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in sales engineering, aircraft performance analysis or aircraft operations at an airline or charter operator.
  • Strong understanding of aircraft performance, operating economics, and mission analysis.
  • Working familiarity with FAA aircraft operational requirements under 14 CFR Parts 91 and 135, including implications for required aircraft performance and operating limitations
  • Experience developing and maintaining analytical tools supporting commercial or operational decisions
  • Hands-on experience developing complex Excel models
  • Ability to integrate and build upon a performance code base developed in Python and Matlab
  • Ability to synthesize complex engineering data into clear, decision-ready outputs for customers and leadership.
  • Solid communication skills and comfort engaging directly with customers.

Bonus Points:
  • Pilot's license and/or operational experience at an airline or charter operator a strong plus
  • Experience with electric or hybrid-electric aircraft architectures
  • Experience developing interactive analytical tools in a web- or app-based environment
  • Prior experience working with airline or operator fleet-planning organizations.
  • Masters or PhD degree is a plus but not required.
