A typical day in People Operations involves a blend of administrative tasks, employee support, and strategic initiatives. You might conduct onboarding for new hires, resolve employee inquiries, process payroll or benefits, and analyze workforce data. Additionally, you’ll collaborate with managers to address employee relations issues and implement programs that improve workplace engagement and retention. This role often requires multitasking and adapting to evolving business needs, making each day varied and dynamic. You'll frequently work with cross-functional teams, making strong communication and collaboration skills essential.

What is the highest paid HR job?

The highest paid HR roles are typically HR Directors or Chief Human Resources Officers (CHROs), who oversee strategic HR functions and organizational policies. These positions often require extensive experience, leadership skills, and advanced certifications, with salaries varying based on company size and industry.

What is a People Operations job?

A People Operations job focuses on enhancing the employee experience, fostering company culture, and optimizing HR processes to improve engagement and productivity. Unlike traditional HR, People Operations takes a more strategic, data-driven, and employee-centric approach. Responsibilities may include talent acquisition, performance management, benefits administration, and workplace culture initiatives. The goal is to create a supportive environment where employees can thrive and contribute effectively to the company's success.

What is a people operations job?

A People Operations job involves managing employee-related functions such as recruitment, onboarding, benefits, performance management, and employee engagement. It focuses on creating a positive workplace culture and often requires skills in HR software, communication, and organizational policies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the People Operations position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a People Operations professional, you need a strong background in HR processes, data analysis, compliance, and talent management, often supported by a degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with HRIS systems, payroll platforms, and certifications such as SHRM-CP or PHR is highly valuable. These competencies are essential for attracting, retaining, and engaging a productive workforce while ensuring all HR functions run smoothly.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

People Operations roles typically do not reach $10,000 per month without significant experience or specialized skills. High-paying jobs in sales, real estate, or entrepreneurship can sometimes generate this income without a degree, but they often require strong networking, sales ability, or business acumen. Most roles with such earnings usually demand experience, certifications, or entrepreneurial effort rather than formal education alone.

People Operations is a modern approach to managing employee experience and organizational culture, often seen as an evolution of traditional HR. While HR typically focuses on compliance, payroll, and benefits, People Operations emphasizes strategic initiatives like employee engagement, development, and process optimization, often using data and technology tools. Both roles aim to support employees but differ in scope and approach, with People Operations generally adopting a more proactive and innovative mindset.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the employee experience from onboarding through offboarding, ensuring team members feel supported and set up for success.

  • Serve as the DRI for core people operations workflows, including payroll support, benefits administration, reimbursements, leave tracking, policy management, equity administration, and employee records.

  • Partner directly with leadership to improve people processes, support employees through key moments, and help the company scale thoughtfully.

Job description

Why Mintlify?
We're on a mission to empower builders.
  • Massive reach: Our docs platform serves 100 million+ developers every year and powers documentation for 20,000+ companies, including Anthropic, Microsoft, PayPal, Spotify, Coinbase, X, and over 20% of the last YC batch.
  • Small team, huge impact: We recently passed 65 employees and raised a $45 million Series B led by A16Z and Salesforce Ventures. Each new hire has a huge impact on shaping the company's trajectory.
  • Culture of slope over y-intercept: We value learning velocity, grit, and unapologetically unique personalities.

We grew in value faster than headcount and we're looking to align the two quickly.
What you'll work on here
  • Owning the employee experience from onboarding through offboarding, ensuring every team member feels supported, connected, and set up for success.
  • Building a structured onboarding program with regular touchpoints for both new hires and managers throughout the first week, first month, and first 90 days.
  • Creating a retention-focused operating rhythm across the company, proactively identifying opportunities to improve employee experience before issues arise.
  • Serving as the DRI for many of our core people operations workflows, including payroll support, benefits administration, reimbursements, leave tracking, policy management, equity administration, and employee records.
  • Partnering directly with leadership to improve people processes, support employees through key moments, and help the company scale thoughtfully.
  • Playing a meaningful role in our expansion to additional offices, supporting international colleagues, and figuring out immigration policies
  • Driving follow-through on employee feedback, and planning offsites, team outings, and other initiatives that strengthen culture.
  • Building systems before we need them, creating the right amount of structure without introducing unnecessary process.
  • Using modern tooling and AI to automate repetitive work and spend more time on high-impact employee interactions.
  • Embodying our culture throughout every interaction you have, whether with employees, candidates, vendors, or other stakeholders.

What you bring to the table
  • 2-5+ years of experience in People Operations or another highly operational role at a fast-growing company.
  • You genuinely care about people and are motivated by helping others do their best work.
  • You are highly organized, detail-oriented, and exceptionally reliable. When you own something, people stop worrying about it.
  • You balance empathy with operational rigor and can handle sensitive situations with sound judgment and discretion.
  • You have a strong bias toward action and enjoy turning ambiguity into clear, repeatable systems.
  • No task feels beneath you.
  • You thrive as a generalist and are excited to work across a wide range of responsibilities as the company grows. You're open to helping our talent team as well as required.
  • You know how to leverage AI tools and automation to eliminate repetitive operational work.

Bonus Points
  • You've helped build or scale People Operations at a Seed through Series C company.
  • You have experience supporting international employees and globally distributed teams.
  • You have hands-on experience with payroll, benefits, equity administration, or HR systems.
  • You've planned company offsites and large-scale employee events.

Why you should join our Talent & People team
This is a rare seat to join a startup fresh off a Series B.
Talent isn't a talking point for us - it's the single most critical thing to protect as we scale.
You'll work directly with our founders and hiring managers, and will have the opportunity to work closely with our Talent team as well.
Company Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation and equity
  • 20 days paid time off every year
  • 401k or RRSP
  • $420/mo. wellness stipend
  • 100% coverage for Health, dental, vision
  • Free Ubers to and from work
  • Free lunch and dinners
  • Annual team offsite (previously went to Alaska, Hawaii)
