Job description

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is currently seeking a Manager, Application Development to join its Application Development team. In this role, the Manager, Application Development is responsible for overseeing and managing the development and maintenance of software applications. The Manager, Application Development will lead a team of developers, database developers, and quality assurance analysts, in collaboration with cross-functional teams, to ensure the successful delivery of software solutions, aligned with organizational strategy.


Reporting to the Director, Application Development, the Manager, Application Development has the following primary responsibilities:


  • Lead and support a team of software developers, database developers, and quality assurance analysts by providing guidance, coaching, and mentoring while fostering professional growth and development in a positive and collaborative environment.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including product management, architecture, business units and operations, to ensure alignment of development activities with organizational strategy.
  • Oversee the full software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis and design to coding, testing, and deployment.
  • Develop and manage project plans, timelines, and Application Development resources to ensure successful and on-time delivery of software projects.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the development team, ensuring the use of best practices, coding standards, and appropriate technologies.
  • Implement and sustain quality assurance processes to deliver high-quality and reliable software solutions.


The ideal candidate has 10 years of professional experience in application or systems development, with at least three years of development management experience in multi-project environments. An in-depth background in software development, with an understanding of programming languages, development frameworks, and best practices is required. Experience as a people manager or team lead is preferred. Experience leveraging AI in Application Development practices desired.


The successful incumbent possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across the organization and within their team. A person with problem-solving and decision-making acumen, along with the intuitive aptitude to engage with and sustain high-performing teams will thrive in this role.


This role requires an on-site office presence at least one day per week. ABIM offices are located in the historic section of Philadelphia, 510 Walnut Street, Suite 1700.
