What does an instructional design associate do?

An Instructional Design Associate supports the development of educational materials and learning experiences by assisting senior instructional designers in creating course content, assessments, and multimedia resources. They help ensure that instructional materials are engaging, effective, and aligned with learning objectives. Typical responsibilities include conducting research, organizing course materials, and assisting with the implementation of instructional technologies. This role often involves collaborating with subject matter experts, educators, and other team members to deliver high-quality learning solutions.

What types of projects do instructional design associates typically work on, and how do they collaborate with subject matter experts?

Instructional Design Associates often work on developing e-learning modules, instructor-led training materials, and blended learning solutions. They frequently collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather content, ensure accuracy, and align learning objectives with organizational goals. This collaboration may involve interviews, feedback sessions, and iterative revisions to instructional materials. The role requires strong communication and project management skills to balance input from SMEs while adhering to deadlines and maintaining instructional quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an instructional design associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Instructional Design Associate, you need a solid grasp of instructional design principles, adult learning theories, and often a related degree such as in education, instructional technology, or a similar field. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools (like Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and sometimes certifications such as ATD or CPLP are typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills help you effectively gather requirements and work with subject matter experts. These competencies ensure the creation of engaging, effective learning experiences that meet organizational goals and learner needs.

Job description

Huron helps its clients drive growth, enhance performance and sustain leadership in the markets they serve. We help healthcare organizations build innovation capabilities and accelerate key growth initiatives, enabling organizations to own the future, instead of being disrupted by it. Together, we empower clients to create sustainable growth, optimize internal processes and deliver better consumer outcomes.
Health systems, hospitals and medical clinics are under immense pressure to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the cost of providing patient care. Investing in new partnerships, clinical services and technology is not enough to create meaningful and substantive change. To succeed long-term, healthcare organizations must empower leaders, clinicians, employees, affiliates and communities to build cultures that foster innovation to achieve the best outcomes for patients.
Joining the Huron team means you'll help our clients evolve and adapt to the rapidly changing healthcare environment and optimize existing business operations, improve clinical outcomes, create a more consumer-centric healthcare experience, and drive physician, patient and employee engagement across the enterprise.
Join our team as the expert you are now and create your future.

We're looking for an Instructional Design Associate to join our team. You'll be part of our commercial eLearning product team within the Healthcare Consulting Business Unit of Huron's Healthcare division, designing innovative, human-centered learning experiences that elevate workforce performance primarily in the healthcare industry. If you're passionate about transforming people's development through engaging digital learning, we want to hear from you!
In this role, you will collaborate with our design team to develop commercial-grade, interactive eLearning content for our collection of products hosted on the Huron Learning Digital Platform (HLDP). We currently offer coursework on topics like Leadership Development, Revenue Cycle, Patient Experience, and more. We are in a growth mode for this product, and this role would be key in helping us develop more offerings!
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, brings deep instructional design expertise, and can translate complex information into engaging, results-driven learning experiences with a strong customer focus. This is an exciting opportunity to help grow and innovate with our team as we take our digital learning product to the next level.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Own the end-to-end design and development of commercial eLearning courses, from initial scoping through final delivery

  • Develop detailed storyboards and scripts that translate complex content into engaging, results-driven learning experiences

  • Design and build interactive eLearning and video content using Articulate 360 (Rise and Storyline), Camtasia or Adobe Premiere Pro, and supporting tools

  • Apply instructional design best practices and adult learning principles to create high-quality digital content aligned to learner and business needs

  • Partner with subject matter experts and cross-functional stakeholders to scope content, align on learning strategies, and advance projects

  • Manage projects independently by balancing timelines, communicating proactively, and escalating risks or issues as needed

  • Conduct quality assurance reviews to ensure alignment with design standards, user experience expectations, and commercial eLearning quality

  • Continuously improve content and processes by incorporating feedback, monitoring trends, and applying new tools and approaches

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in curriculum development and eLearning design, demonstrating deep knowledge of adult learning principles and experience designing for a professional audience

  • Expert-level proficiency in Articulate 360 (Rise and Storyline)

  • Advanced proficiency in Camtasia or Adobe Premiere Pro for video and multimedia production

  • Experience working within learning management systems (LMS), including supporting content publishing, testing, and troubleshooting (Absorb LMS experience preferred)

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and related tools)

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a related field

  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • Proven self-starter mindset, including the ability to proactively resolve issues and escalate risks appropriately

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly across cross-functional teams

  • Commitment to iterative design, with a focus on learner needs, client expectations, and evolving healthcare trends

  • eLearning portfolio required, showcasing a range of high-quality, commercial learning assets

  • US work authorization required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in healthcare or healthcare-adjacent industries, with familiarity with clinical, operational, or workforce-focused content strongly preferred
