Job Summary:
The Database Administrator is responsible for providing database services as well as development support to our organization. The primary responsibilities of this role would include the design, installation, monitoring, and performance tuning of production, test/development, and QA database environments while ensuring high levels of data availability. The Database Administrator will be implementing and overseeing database policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of our PostgreSQL databases and their accompanying software.
Essential Functions:
  • Administer and manage databases instances in AWS and Azure.
  • Provision and manage AWS hosted PostgreSQL, MS SQL, and Oracle and Azure SQL.
  • Maintain high availability and with high availability and clustering as required by the application.
  • Perform AWS and Azure database instances life cycle management.
  • Maintain database availability and performance through effective monitoring and capacity planning.
  • Optimize your database's performance by properly setting instance parameters, managing defragmentation and indexes, and fine-tuning the query execution plan.
  • Handles database backups, snapshot management, restoration, and replication planning.
  • Backup and restore databases from the S3 bucket.
  • Collaborate with SQL developers on SQL query tuning, index recommendation, and schema design.
  • Implement and enforce security for MS SQL Databases.
  • Assist with impact analysis of any changes made to the database objects.
  • Participate in 24 X 7 on-call rotations and contribute to monthly maintenance work.
  • Provide input on disaster recovery and high-availability strategies, including multi-region failover planning.

Required Experience:
  • BS in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years of experience in designing, provisioning, and managing AWS hosted PostgreSQL, MS SQL, and Oracle RDS.
  • 3+ years of experience in designing, provisioning, and managing Azure SQL.
  • Experience in optimizing performance and ensuring high availability and disaster recovery.
  • An understanding of business processes and the database they access & the flow of information between processes.
  • Skilled in explaining database and data management concepts to technical and business audiences.
  • Knowledge of Unix-like Operating Systems preferably Red Hat Linux.
  • Skilled in problem-solving and analyzing query execution plans for performance tuning.

Preferred Skills & Education:
  • Working with code repositories, completed code reviews and good understanding of a DevOps model.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the 3rd party monitoring products we use (AWS/Dynatrace).
  • Familiar with the AWS fabric.
  • Aurora PostgreSQL and/or MongoDB a plus.
  • Experience with AWX (Ansible) a plus.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and Docker containers a plus.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Works effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both business and technical teams.
