What is a BDR Manager?

A BDR (Business Development Representative) Manager is responsible for leading and coaching a team of BDRs who focus on generating new business opportunities for a company. They oversee prospecting activities, track performance metrics, and collaborate closely with sales and marketing teams to align strategies. BDR Managers play a crucial role in hiring, training, and motivating their team to achieve targets and drive revenue growth. Their efforts help ensure a strong pipeline of qualified leads for the sales organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BDR Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BDR Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, sales acumen, and experience in business development, often supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, sales automation tools, and analytics software is typically required, along with knowledge of outbound prospecting strategies. Outstanding communication, coaching, and motivational skills help foster team success and drive consistent performance. These competencies are crucial for building high-performing BDR teams, achieving sales targets, and supporting organizational growth.

How does a BDR Manager typically support and develop their team to meet sales targets?

A BDR Manager plays a crucial role in coaching and mentoring Business Development Representatives by providing regular feedback, setting clear targets, and implementing effective training programs. They track individual and team performance metrics, troubleshoot challenges with prospecting or lead qualification, and foster collaboration with marketing and sales teams to ensure alignment on goals and messaging. Through regular team meetings and one-on-one sessions, BDR Managers help their team refine outreach strategies and maintain motivation, ultimately driving revenue growth and offering professional development opportunities.

Job description

About the Opportunity

This is Seekr's founding BDR - a hands-on individual contributor role focused on driving pipeline today and building the foundation for a BDR team later. You will own outbound personally - running sequences, prospecting target accounts, holding discovery conversations, and putting sales-accepted opportunities into pipeline yourself.

In parallel, you build the systems a future BDR team will rely on: outbound scripts and talk tracks shaped in partnership with Product Marketing; inbound qualification criteria and sequencing strategy designed in partnership with Demand Generation; persona definitions and account segments built with Product Marketing, Demand Generation, and Marketing Operations. The first time you hire BDRs into this function, they will join a playbook that works because you wrote it from running it.

You are also the research arm for the sales team.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Drive pipeline: run outbound sequences, prospect target accounts, hold discovery conversations, and drive sales-accepted opportunities. The motion gets proven by you doing it, not by you managing someone else doing it.
  • Build the systems the motion runs on: outbound scripts and talk tracks, sequencing strategy, persona definitions and account segments, inbound qualification criteria, discovery framework, and sales engagement tooling configuration. Build them by running, testing, and optimizing.
  • Own outbound sequencing strategy. Work with Technical Product Marketing to ensure the messaging in outbound matches the master framework. Work with Demand Generation on integration into broader campaigns.
  • Own inbound qualification in partnership with MOPs and Demand Gen. Define the criteria, manage the SLA on response time, and own the activation.
  • Partner with Marketing Operations on routing, sequencing and tooling, and reporting on BDR-sourced pipeline.
  • Partner with sales leadership on account prioritization, lead acceptance criteria, and the handoff motion.
  • Run the feedback loop. BDR conversations are a free intelligence stream on objections, language, and competitive positioning. Capture it and route it back to Marketing.
  • Hit pipeline targets. BDR performance is measured in sales-accepted opportunities and pipeline creation, not how many cold calls you made.
  • Build and operate AI-accelerated workflows across the BDR motion - prospect research, account intelligence, sequence personalization, conversation analysis, objection-handling pattern detection. AI accelerates the rep; AI does not replace the rep.
Qualifications and Skills
  • 6+ years in BDR or sales development roles.
  • Demonstrated track record of hitting outbound pipeline targets at a B2B technology company.
  • Experience with sales engagement platforms (Outreach, Salesloft), CRM (Salesforce), and conversation intelligence tools (Gong, Chorus).
  • Self-directed builder and strong coaching muscle - the ability to do the core work while also leading others to better performance and outcomes.
  • Demonstrated practice using AI tools in the BDR workflow - prospect research, personalization at scale, call analysis. We will ask what you have built and where you draw the line between AI assistance and rep judgment.
  • Comfort partnering with sales leadership on shared targets and shared workflow.
  • Comfort with technical AI subject matter - enough to listen to a discovery call and know whether the rep handled the technical objections correctly.
  • Experience in dual-use environments, and proven ability to navigate the complexities and unique requirements (and limitations) of both.
