What is an Antitrust job?

An Antitrust job involves analyzing and enforcing laws that promote fair competition and prevent monopolistic practices. Professionals in this field work for government agencies, law firms, or corporations to investigate mergers, anti-competitive behavior, and compliance with antitrust regulations. They may conduct legal research, review business practices, and advise clients on regulatory risks. Antitrust specialists help ensure a competitive market by preventing price-fixing, market allocation, and other unfair trade practices.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an antitrust attorney or specialist?

Antitrust professionals spend their days analyzing mergers and acquisitions, assessing business practices for potential competition concerns, and preparing briefs, reports, or presentations for clients and regulatory bodies. Much of the work involves conducting legal or economic research, collaborating with economists, business professionals, and regulators, and sometimes representing clients during negotiations or proceedings. Tasks may also include monitoring regulatory developments and advising organizations on antitrust compliance. The role often requires juggling multiple cases or projects simultaneously, making time management and teamwork especially important. These responsibilities ensure that organizations operate within legal parameters while promoting fair and open market competition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Antitrust position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Antitrust attorney or specialist, you need a deep understanding of antitrust laws, economic principles, and legal research, typically backed by a law degree (JD) and relevant bar admission or advanced economics qualifications. Familiarity with legal research databases (e.g., LexisNexis, Westlaw), regulatory compliance tools, and sometimes economic modeling software is essential. Strong analytical thinking, persuasive communication, and the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams set outstanding professionals apart. These skills and qualities are crucial to effectively analyze complex market behaviors, advise clients or employers, and advocate in high-stakes regulatory settings.

Job description

Antitrust Associate Attorney โ€“ Midlevel

Antitrust, Consumer Protection & Unfair Competition

Washington, D.C.

(also open to Chicago, IL; Palo Alto, CA; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA)

Hybrid โ€“ Full-Time - 1,850 Billable Requirement

The Firm:

A globally recognized AmLaw 100 firm and consistently ranked as one of Fortuneโ€™s Best Places to Work. This international firm is known for its collaborative culture, high-level antitrust practice, and commitment to excellence in client service. The Antitrust, Consumer Protection & Unfair Competition group is expanding and seeking a strong mid-level associate to support sophisticated litigation and regulatory matters.

Description:

  • This is high-caliber antitrust work โ€” the kind that shapes markets and makes headlines.
  • The firm is seeking a mid-level associate (3โ€“5 years) to join its nationally respected Antitrust practice. The role includes complex antitrust litigation, regulatory counseling, and agency-facing matters involving the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission.
  • Youโ€™ll be working on significant investigations, merger reviews, and competition disputes. Expect real responsibility โ€” drafting motions, handling discovery, preparing for depositions, contributing to strategy sessions, and advising clients navigating HSR filings and potential Second Requests.
  • This is not a training-wheel role. Itโ€™s built for someone who already knows how to think like an antitrust lawyer โ€” someone who can analyze markets, understand competitive effects, and communicate clearly under pressure.
  • If youโ€™ve been grinding in BigLaw or inside DOJ/FTC and want to continue operating at the highest level within a collaborative, nationally respected platform, this is the lane.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from a top-tier law school
  • 3โ€“5 years antitrust litigation experience
  • Experience at AmLaw 100 firm or DOJ/FTC Antitrust Division
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills
  • Experience with federal antitrust investigations
  • Familiarity with merger review and HSR process
  • Second Request investigation experience preferred
  • Judicial clerkship experience a plus
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • Ability to manage complex litigation matters
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills
  • Professional maturity and team-oriented mindset

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary range: $260,000 โ€“ $365,000 annually (based on qualifications and experience)
  • Annual discretionary bonus
  • 401(k) plan
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Personal medical and parental leave
  • Up to ten paid holidays
  • Family care benefits
