What does a VP of Technology do?

A VP of Technology, or Vice President of Technology, is a senior executive responsible for overseeing an organization's technological direction and strategy. They lead technology teams, manage IT budgets, and ensure that technology initiatives align with business goals. This role often includes evaluating new technologies, establishing technical standards, and collaborating with other departments to drive innovation and efficiency. The VP of Technology also plays a key role in digital transformation, cybersecurity, and maintaining the overall health of the organization's technological infrastructure.

What is the role of VP of technology?

The VP of Technology is responsible for overseeing a company's technological development and strategy, managing IT teams, and ensuring the implementation of technical solutions that support business goals. They often collaborate with executive leadership, stay current with industry trends, and may require expertise in areas like software development, infrastructure, and cybersecurity.

Which 3 jobs will survive AI?

For a VP of Technology, roles that involve strategic oversight, complex problem-solving, and leadership—such as Chief Technology Officer, IT Director, and Innovation Manager—are less likely to be fully replaced by AI. These positions require human judgment, cross-functional coordination, and adapting to rapidly changing technology landscapes. Technical skills, experience, and the ability to manage teams remain critical in these roles.

Is a VP higher than a CTO?

In most organizations, the Vice President (VP) of Technology is a senior executive role overseeing multiple departments or functions, while the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is typically a C-level executive responsible for the company's overall technology strategy. The hierarchy depends on the company's structure, but generally, the CTO reports to the VP of Technology or directly to the CEO, making the VP higher in some organizational charts. Both roles require strong leadership, technical expertise, and strategic planning skills.

What is a VP in a tech company?

A VP in a tech company is a Vice President responsible for overseeing specific departments or functions, such as engineering, product, or technology strategy. They typically lead teams, develop technical roadmaps, and collaborate with executive leadership to align technology initiatives with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VP of Technology, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VP of Technology, you need deep expertise in software development, IT infrastructure, and strategic technology planning, typically supported by an advanced degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with enterprise-level platforms, cloud services, cybersecurity frameworks, and certifications such as PMP or AWS Certified Solutions Architect is highly valuable. Exceptional leadership, communication, and change management skills help drive innovation and align technical teams with business objectives. These capabilities ensure the organization remains competitive, secure, and agile in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

What are some common challenges a VP of Technology faces when aligning technology initiatives with business goals?

A VP of Technology often encounters the challenge of bridging the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders. This includes translating complex technical concepts into actionable business strategies, prioritizing projects that deliver the most value, and ensuring that technology investments align with the company’s long-term vision. Additionally, they must manage competing demands on resources, foster cross-department collaboration, and adapt quickly to emerging technologies while maintaining system stability and security. Building strong communication channels and a clear understanding of business objectives are key to overcoming these challenges.

Job description

Description

Title: Vice President, Technology

Location: Dallas, TX; Clearwater, FL

Reports To: Chief Digital Officer

About TelyRx:

TelyRx is a tech-enabled pharmacy revolutionizing access to prescription medications through next-day delivery, innovative technology, and seamless customer experience. We are breaking down barriers in healthcare to provide essential medications quickly, affordably, and reliably.

Position Overview:

TelyRx is seeking a Vice President, Technology to lead the design, development, and execution of our end-to-end technology platform as we scale into our next phase of growth. Reporting directly to the Chief Digital Officer, this role will own the technology roadmap and delivery across consumer-facing digital experiences, backend systems, infrastructure, and internal IT operations.

This is a hands-on executive leadership role for a technology leader who can balance strategic vision with pragmatic execution-building scalable, secure, and high-performance systems that support a regulated healthcare environment while delivering best-in-class DTC experiences.

The VP of Technology will partner closely with Product, Digital Experience, Analytics, Security, Compliance, and Operations to ensure technology is a growth accelerator-not a bottleneck-as TelyRx expands product offerings, patient volume, and channels.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Technology Strategy & Roadmap

  • Own and execute the technology roadmap aligned with TelyRx's business objectives, growth targets, and digital strategy.
  • Translate product and business priorities into clear architectural decisions, delivery plans, and milestones.
  • Partner with the CDO and executive team to evaluate build vs. buy decisions and long-term platform investments.

Product & Software Development

  • Lead all software development efforts, including web, backend services, APIs, integrations, and mobile applications.
  • Oversee development and evolution of our Magento-based eCommerce platform, including transition toward headless and composable architectures.
  • Ensure high standards for code quality, performance, security, scalability, and reliability.
  • Establish modern engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing, documentation, and release management.

Consumer-Facing & Mobile Experiences

  • Support delivery of consumer-focused digital experiences, ensuring fast, intuitive, and reliable patient journeys.
  • Lead or oversee mobile application development (iOS/Android), ensuring alignment with core platform services and data systems.
  • Partner with UX/UI and Product teams to ensure technology enables experimentation, iteration, and personalization.

Cloud Infrastructure & Architecture

  • Own and evolve TelyRx's cloud infrastructure (AWS or similar), including scalability, uptime, cost optimization, and disaster recovery.
  • Design and maintain secure, compliant cloud-native architectures supporting high transaction volumes and sensitive health data.
  • Ensure strong monitoring, logging, and observability and alerting across systems.

Network Engineering, Systems & IT Operations

  • Oversee network engineering, systems administration, and IT operations, including internal tools, identity access, and endpoint management.
  • Ensure reliable, secure environments for both corporate users and production systems.
  • Establish clear operational processes for incident response, change management, and vendor management.

Security, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Partner with Security and Compliance leaders to support HIPAA-compliant architectures and practices.
  • Ensure security-by-design principles across applications, infrastructure, and internal systems.
  • Support audits, risk assessments, and compliance initiatives without slowing product velocity.

AI & Emerging Technology

  • Evaluate and guide AI and automation strategies across engineering, operations, analytics, and customer experience.
  • Identify opportunities where AI can improve efficiency, personalization, fraud prevention, support workflows, or decision-making.
  • Ensure responsible, compliant adoption of AI technologies.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Build, lead, and mentor high-performing engineering, infrastructure, and IT teams.
  • Set clear expectations, career paths, and accountability across technical functions.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

What We're Looking For:

  • A builder-mindset technology leader who thrives in scaling environments.
  • Comfortable operating at both architectural and execution levels.
  • Strong partner to Product and Digital leaders, not a siloed IT operator.
  • Pragmatic, security-aware, and performance-driven.
  • Experience balancing speed, quality, and compliance in regulated industries.
  • Clear communicator who can translate technical complexity for executives

Experience & Background

  • 15+ years of experience in technology, engineering, or systems leadership.
  • Prior experience as a VP of Technology, Head of Engineering, or similar senior role.
  • Demonstrated ownership of large-scale consumer-facing platforms.
  • Strong experience with Magento (preferred) and modern headless / composable CMS architectures.
  • Experience delivering and supporting mobile applications.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms.
  • Proven background in software development, infrastructure, and IT operations.
  • Exposure to healthcare, fintech, or other regulated industries strongly preferred.

Technical Competencies

  • Modern web architectures, APIs, microservices, and integrations
  • CI/CD pipelines, DevOps, and cloud-native tooling
  • Network engineering, systems administration, and IT governance
  • Security best practices, access control, and compliance frameworks
  • AI/ML strategy exposure (hands-on implementation not required)

Leadership & Execution

  • Experience managing distributed teams and external vendors
  • Strong delivery orientation with a bias toward action
  • Ability to scale systems and teams without over-engineering
  • Executive-level communication and decision-making skills
