Position Summary
The Safety Representative works closely with the Safety team, business leaders, contractors, and employees to support compliance initiatives, ensure training effectiveness, and promote a strong safety culture.
Essential Functions & Major Accountabilities
Driver Onboarding & Monitoring
  • Conduct orientation for all new drivers, instructing new drivers on Lawrence policies and procedures and equipment.
  • Add and manage driver records in Geotab, Netradyne (Driver-I), and Omnitracs.
  • Update new drivers in TMW File Maintenance and other internal systems.
  • Perform initial road exams for new applicants to demonstrate drivers' knowledge and skills as they pertain to pre-trip inspections, safe vehicle control, and on-road driving knowledge. The exam will determine if the applicant can assess that the vehicle is safe to drive, maintains full control, utilizes proper shifting and demonstrates safe driving habits throughout the road test

Driver Behavior & Compliance Monitoring
  • Monitor driver event recordings for unsafe driving behaviors.
  • Perform periodic lot safety checks and audit pre- and post- trip inspections.
  • Conduct DVIR weekly reports to identify vehicle deficiencies.
  • Support log auditing (paper and electronic), including edits, unassigned mileage, and time.
  • Review CSA violations and provide feedback / coaching as directed.

Safety Training & Culture
  • Assist in conducting Forklift and First Aid training and maintaining documentation.
  • Implement new training programs under Safety Director's guidance.
  • Present training modules and conduct safety coaching sessions as needed.
  • Analyze trends in safety behaviors and provide proper instruction to promote positive safety performance.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
  • Developing standards of excellence and building / promoting safety culture and awareness within our company.

Regulatory Compliance & Reporting
  • Maintain the accident register.
  • Become the subject matter expert on DOT / CSA regulations according to 49CFR.
  • Assist with incident / accident reporting and investigations.

Other Duties
  • Manage all non-CDL files
  • Any additional duties as required

Qualifications & Competencies
  • General knowledge of the transportation industry.
  • Specific knowledge of DOT regulations with an emphasis on Hours of Service.
  • Knowledge of CSA regulations, the CSA reporting system, and its functionality.
  • Ability to multitask, support ongoing projects, and meet deadlines while keeping a solution focused mind set.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to positively influence others.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships that are result and improvement oriented.
  • Ability to present current training programs at the direction of the Director of Safety.

Education/Experience Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in safety, transportation, or a related field. A minimum of 1 year of relevant experience within the transportation industry will be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Minimum of 1 year experience with DOT regulations either as a commercial driver, fleet manager, dispatcher or as a private or government safety officer required.
  • MS Office and general computer skills required.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience and familiarity with transportation management and related platforms/systems
(Geotab, Omnitracs, TMW, TMT, Netradyne)
Coaching and/or mentoring experience/skills.
Experience in organized training and development programs.
CDL Class A license.
