Job description

Part-Time SAT Tutor (Digital SAT)

Teacher Tutors is hiring experienced SAT tutors to prepare high school students for the digital SAT. We're looking for tutors who know the current exam - not the pre-2024 paper version - and who have actually walked students through the adaptive format, the Bluebook app, and the new question types.

This is high-stakes work. A 100-point score improvement can change which colleges a student gets into and which scholarships they qualify for. The students we work with and their families know that, and they want a tutor who takes it as seriously as they do.

You'll meet with students in their homes, online, or at our Livingston, NJ office. We match families to tutors based on your preferred travel radius (you tell us how far you're willing to drive) and we work within that.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver one-on-one SAT prep sessions covering both sections of the digital SAT: Reading and Writing, and Math.
  • Start with a diagnostic - typically a full-length Bluebook practice test - and build a study plan around the specific question types and content areas where the student is losing points.
  • Teach the strategy layer alongside the content: pacing across adaptive modules, when to flag and return, calculator efficiency, process of elimination on Reading and Writing questions, and how to handle the second module's difficulty shift.
  • Assign and review practice sets between sessions, and track score trajectory across full-length tests.
  • Communicate clearly with parents about realistic score targets, time commitment, and progress โ€” including when expectations need recalibrating.
  • Submit a short session note after each tutoring session so families and our Director know what was covered and what's next.
  • Coordinate with families on test-date logistics: which administration to register for, how many full-lengths to complete beforehand, and when to taper before exam day.
Coverage area

We serve families across northern New Jersey, with most in-home sessions concentrated in Essex, Morris, Union, and Bergen counties. When you join, you'll let us know your preferred travel radius from home, and we'll match you with students within that range. Online sessions are available statewide.

Requirements

Requirements
  • Hands-on experience with the digital SAT (post-March 2024), including familiarity with the Bluebook testing app, the adaptive module structure, and the current question types in Reading and Writing and Math.
  • Demonstrated track record of student score improvement on the SAT. We'll ask about specific examples during your interview.
  • Strong content knowledge in both sections you tutor. Most tutors specialize in either Math or Reading and Writing; tutors comfortable with both are especially valued.
  • For Math: solid grounding in algebra, advanced math (functions, nonlinear equations), problem-solving and data analysis, and geometry/trig fundamentals.
  • For Reading and Writing: command of standard English conventions, rhetorical analysis, and the reasoning required for inference and evidence questions.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a related field. Teaching certification is a plus but not required for SAT tutoring specifically.
  • Strong communication skills with both teenagers and parents. SAT prep often involves managing significant anxiety on both sides.
  • Availability for after-school, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with heavier demand in the spring (April-June) and fall (September-November) leading up to the major test dates.
  • Comfort with educational technology, Zoom or Google Meet for online sessions, the Bluebook app for assigning practice, and tools for sharing problem sets and tracking progress.
  • Reliable transportation for in-home sessions.
Nice to have
  • Personal SAT score of 1500+ (or 1450+ with strong teaching experience)
  • Experience tutoring or teaching the ACT as well
  • Experience running small-group SAT cohorts (2-4 students), which we offer at our Livingston office
  • High school classroom teaching experience in English, math, or a related subject
  • Familiarity with PSAT/NMSQT prep for sophomores and juniors targeting National Merit
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, or other languages common in the communities we serve)

Benefits

Compensation & employment status
  • Pay range: $50/hour. SAT prep falls at the upper end of our tutor pay range, reflecting the specialized content knowledge and score-impact accountability the role requires.
  • W-2 (default): Most part-time tutors join as W-2 employees. Teacher Tutors handles payroll, taxes, and carries professional liability insurance covering W-2 tutors during scheduled sessions.
  • 1099 (optional): Tutors who prefer 1099 contractor status are welcome, provided they carry their own professional liability insurance and operate through a registered LLC. Documentation will be requested during onboarding.
