What is InsurTech?

Insurtech, short for insurance technology, refers to the innovative use of technology to improve and streamline the insurance industry. This includes leveraging artificial intelligence, big data, mobile apps, and other digital tools to enhance customer experience, speed up claims processing, and create new insurance products. Insurtech companies often focus on making insurance more accessible, affordable, and personalized for consumers, while also helping insurers operate more efficiently. The sector is rapidly evolving and is transforming traditional insurance models.

What are Insurtech jobs?

Insurtech jobs focus on the engineering of software and hardware, the collection and analysis of data, the implementation of cybersecurity, and the development of apps for insurance companies. The duties of IT and software professionals in the Insurtech industry depend on their area of specialization. The responsibilities of a data scientist, for example, revolve around analyzing data that they collect from smartphone apps, tracking devices, and wearables. Hardware and software engineers create these devices and apps and develop their data collection capacity and user interfaces. Software and web developers work on insurance sites and e-marketing tools for insurance companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an Insurtech role, and why are they important?

To excel in an Insurtech role, you typically need a strong background in insurance concepts, data analytics, and business or computer science, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with insurance management systems, cloud platforms, and programming languages like Python or SQL, as well as certifications such as CPCU or IT-related credentials, is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication set top performers apart, especially when bridging gaps between technical and business teams. These skills are vital for driving digital transformation, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering innovative solutions in a rapidly evolving insurance marketplace.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in Insurtech roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Insurtech roles often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory requirements, integrating new technologies with legacy insurance systems, and fostering collaboration between technical teams and traditional insurance experts. Addressing these challenges requires continuous learning about the evolving regulatory landscape, strong communication skills to bridge knowledge gaps between teams, and a proactive approach to change management. Many Insurtech teams benefit from agile methodologies and cross-disciplinary collaboration to drive innovation while maintaining compliance and client trust.

Akur8 is a fast-growing InsurTech scale-up on a mission to modernize how insurers assess, price, and manage risk.
Our next-generation SaaS platform combines transparent machine learning, predictive analytics, and smart product design to turn complex insurance workflows into scalable, data-driven systems.
Powered by expert engineering, data, product, and actuarial teams, Akur8 enables insurers to model risk up to 10x faster while maintaining transparency, explainability, and regulatory trust.
As our product suite expands, we are building an end-to-end platform supporting pricing, reserving, and forward-looking risk decisions - helping insurers operate efficiently in a complex environment.
Recognized globally, Akur8 has been featured in:
  • CB Insights' Insurtech 50 (2025)
  • CNBC's InsurTech Top 150 (2025)
  • InsurTech100 Global Insurtech Top 100 (2025)
  • Professional Equality Index 97/100 (2025)

With 40+ nationalities across 8 global offices, we serve 320+ clients across 4 continents while maintaining a strong engineering and product culture.
We are proud to be an equal opportunities employer, fostering an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives help shape better products and decisions.
As a Sales Director US, you will have a key role in scaling Akur8's business in our number one priority market. You will own the US territory with the mindset of a business owner, taking responsibility for territory strategy, quota, pipeline, forecast, partnerships, strategic accounts, and revenue performance.
The United States is a large and sophisticated insurance market, with national and regional carriers, reinsurers, MGAs, brokers, InsurTechs, and specialized lines businesses. You will use your knowledge of the US insurance industry to identify where Akur8 can create measurable value, open relationships with senior decision-makers, and turn market insight into new business across Tier 1 accounts and other priority segments.
You will lead complex enterprise sales from first conversation through contract signature and expansion. You will be part of our North American sales team and work closely with actuarial data science, solutions, marketing, customer success, product, and leadership teams. You will also build trusted relationships with consulting and technology partners that can extend Akur8's reach across the United States.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This will include, but not be limited to, the following responsibilities:
  • As a Sales Director, you will be responsible for owning your territory and the associated quota
  • Identify new opportunities within existing accounts, but also exploring every segment and lines of business to sign new logos within your territory
  • Manage the entire sales cycle, from prospecting to contract negotiation, and managing the relationship post close, with a focus driving tight sales cycles
  • Build relationships with Chief Actuaries, Chief Underwriting Officers, Chief Data Officers, CIOs, CFOs, CTOs and other senior decision-makers.
  • Work on and submitting proposals, as well as negotiating contracts with clients
  • Build strong, long-lasting relationships with strategic prospects and clients
  • Think out of the box, suggesting new ideas and approaches to improve our product, based on client expectations

This role is ideally based in our New York City office, though we are also open to remote candidates located in the Eastern or Central time zones of the United States. Frequent travel will be required for business development events and client meetings.
We are looking for a senior enterprise sales leader who understands the US insurance industry and can sell complex software to large, multi-stakeholder organizations. You have the commercial judgement to create a territory strategy, the industry knowledge to earn credibility with insurance executives, and the discipline to deliver against a demanding quota.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND CAPABILITIES
• 10+ years of professional experience, including substantial experience in B2B enterprise sales, insurance technology, actuarial consulting, underwriting, pricing, reserving, or insurance transformation is a big plus.
• A proven record of carrying a quota and closing complex, high-value software or technology contracts with US insurance organizations.
• Deep understanding of how US insurers make decisions about pricing, reserving, underwriting, data, risk, and technology investments.
• Experience selling to senior insurance stakeholders and building support across actuarial, underwriting, data, IT, procurement, finance, risk, and legal teams.
• Experience managing long sales cycles with several decision-makers, formal procurement, competing priorities, and executive scrutiny.
• A genuine new-business mindset. You enjoy opening doors, creating demand, and building relationships where Akur8 has no established path.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the executive presence to lead high-value commercial conversations.
• A collaborative working style and the autonomy to manage a territory while partnering closely with teams across Akur8.
WHAT WILL SET YOU APART
• Experience selling complex insurance software including pricing, reserving, actuarial, underwriting, risk, data, core systems or analytics software.
• Existing relationships with senior decision-makers across the US insurance markets.
IMPORTANT: You must possess an employment status that will allow work from our US office.
As a newcomer, you'll be joining a diverse, highly skilled and motivated team, with a strong Tech DNA, colleagues that are eager to share their knowledge and passion.
We care about strong teamwork and a positive day-to-day environment. The team regularly connects through optional activities such as team lunches, sports, karaoke, or occasional after-work gatherings.
In addition to this, we will provide you with:
  • The pay range for this role is $250,000 to $300,000 USD OTE
  • Health insurance , Dental and Vision coverage (including spouse and family coverage)
  • 401K Company match
  • Life insurance
  • Cell Phone & Internet reimbursement
  • 25 days of PTO/year
  • Commuter benefit
  • Gym membership via ClassPass
  • IT equipment allowance
  • Professional development & trainings
  • Team fun: regular company gatherings and team events

As part of our recruitment process, we may carry out background checks in line with the applicable laws and regulations in the countries where we operate. These checks may include verification of employment history, education, and, where legally authorized, criminal records. Any background checks will be performed lawfully before formal employment contracts are signed, with the candidate's consent, and all information collected will be handled confidentially.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to assist with certain stages of the recruitment process. These tools are used to support our recruitment team and do not replace human decision-making. Final hiring decisions are always made by people. If you would like further information about how your data is processed, you can contact us at dpo@akur8.com.
