What is insurtech?

Insurtech, short for insurance technology, refers to the innovative use of technology to improve and streamline the insurance industry. This includes leveraging artificial intelligence, big data, mobile apps, and other digital tools to enhance customer experience, speed up claims processing, and create new insurance products. Insurtech companies often focus on making insurance more accessible, affordable, and personalized for consumers, while also helping insurers operate more efficiently. The sector is rapidly evolving and is transforming traditional insurance models.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an Insurtech role, and why are they important?

To excel in an Insurtech role, you typically need a strong background in insurance concepts, data analytics, and business or computer science, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with insurance management systems, cloud platforms, and programming languages like Python or SQL, as well as certifications such as CPCU or IT-related credentials, is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication set top performers apart, especially when bridging gaps between technical and business teams. These skills are vital for driving digital transformation, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering innovative solutions in a rapidly evolving insurance marketplace.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in Insurtech roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Insurtech roles often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory requirements, integrating new technologies with legacy insurance systems, and fostering collaboration between technical teams and traditional insurance experts. Addressing these challenges requires continuous learning about the evolving regulatory landscape, strong communication skills to bridge knowledge gaps between teams, and a proactive approach to change management. Many Insurtech teams benefit from agile methodologies and cross-disciplinary collaboration to drive innovation while maintaining compliance and client trust.

    Job description

    About Reserv
Reserv is an insurtech creating and incubating cutting-edge AI and automation technology to bring efficiency and simplicity to claims. Founded by insurtech veterans with deep experience in SaaS and digital claims, Reserv is venture-backed by Bain Capital and Altai Ventures and began operations in May 2022. We are focused on automating highly manual tasks to tackle long-standing problems in claims and set a new standard for TPAs, insurance technology providers, and adjusters alike. We have ambitious (but attainable!) goals and need people who can work in an evolving environment. If building a leading TPA and the prospect of tackling the long-standing challenges of the claims role sounds exciting, we can't wait to meet you.
    About the role
As Legal Counsel at Reserv, you will be an early and integral member of our growing legal function, working closely with the VP of Legal to support all aspects of the company's legal needs. This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-moving, venture-backed insurtech leader at an exciting stage of growth - and to gain broad, hands-on experience across transactional, commercial, and operational legal matters.
You'll operate as a true generalist: one day you might be reviewing vendor and customer agreements, the next day advising the product team on data privacy considerations, and the next helping develop internal playbooks and processes. You don't need to be an insurance industry veteran or insurance law expert - a willingness to learn the space combined with strong foundational legal skills are what matter most.
    Who You Are
    • Self-Starter: You are organized, detail-oriented, and take ownership of your work - you don't need to be told the same thing twice.
    • Clear Communicator: You can communicate clearly and concisely with both legal and non-legal audiences, and know when to escalate versus when to move forward.
    • Business-Minded: You have a practical, commercial sensibility - you understand that legal exists to enable the business, not just protect it.
    • Eager Learner: You're intellectually curious and eager to develop expertise in new areas, including insurance, claims, and the regulatory landscape around AI and automation.
    • Adaptable: You thrive in ambiguous, fast-paced environments and are comfortable building processes from scratch when needed.
    • Ethically Grounded: You hold yourself and others to high ethical standards and handle sensitive matters with discretion.
    • And of course - a sense of humor goes a long way around here.

    What You'll Do
    Contracts & Transactional Support
    • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements including customer and vendor contracts, SaaS agreements, NDAs, and partnership agreements.
    • Support contract lifecycle management, helping build and maintain scalable templates and playbooks.
    • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, Product, and Finance to move deals forward efficiently.

    Employment Law and HR Operations
    • Partner with People Ops to assist with corporate policies, the employee handbook, and the employee review process.
    • Assist with employment-related disputes and internal investigations.
    • Advise People Ops partners regarding hiring and employment law matters across 50 states and internationally.

    Legal Operations
    • Help build and improve internal legal processes, templates, and workflows as the company scales.
    • Maintain organized records of contracts, corporate documents, and legal correspondence.
    • Support due diligence and data room preparation for financing rounds or other strategic transactions.

    Compliance & Risk
    • Assist with regulatory and compliance matters, including those specific to the insurance and TPA industry.
    • Support the VP of Legal in tracking and interpreting relevant laws and regulations across the jurisdictions (nationally and internationally) in which Reserv operates.
    • Help identify and flag potential legal risks across business units proactively.

    Cross-Functional Partnership
    • Partner with Product & Engineering on legal considerations related to AI, data privacy, and new feature development.
    • Support outside counsel coordination for specialized matters such as IP, litigation, and international issues.
    • Serve as a reliable, approachable resource for teammates across the company.

    Requirements
    • 3-6 years of legal experience with a law firm, in-house, or a combination.
    • Strong generalist foundation - experience across commercial contracts, corporate matters, employment practices, litigation, and/or regulatory compliance.
    • Prior Big Law or mid-size firm experience in formative years strongly preferred.
    • In-house experience at a startup, tech company, or high-growth business is a plus.
    • Experience in insurance, insurtech or fintech is a plus, but not required - we will teach you what you need to know.
    • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
    • Active admission to a state bar in the United States.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Willingness to travel occasionally as needed.

    Benefits
    • Generous health-insurance package with nationwide coverage, vision, & dental
    • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching
    • Competitive PTO policy - we want our employees fresh, healthy, happy, and energized!
    • Generous family leave policy after 8 months of continuous work
    • Work from anywhere to facilitate your work life balance
    • Apple laptop, large second monitor, and other quality-of-life equipment you may want. Technology is something that should make your life easier, not harder!

At Reserv, we value diversity in backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences and believe that diversity in viewpoints and critical thinking drives innovation, first-principles thinking, and success. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and encourage those from all walks of life to apply. If you believe you are a good fit for this role, we would love to hear from you!
The pay range for this role is:
200,000 - 210,000 USD per year (Remote (Atlanta, GA) )
