What is InsurTech?

Insurtech, short for insurance technology, refers to the innovative use of technology to improve and streamline the insurance industry. This includes leveraging artificial intelligence, big data, mobile apps, and other digital tools to enhance customer experience, speed up claims processing, and create new insurance products. Insurtech companies often focus on making insurance more accessible, affordable, and personalized for consumers, while also helping insurers operate more efficiently. The sector is rapidly evolving and is transforming traditional insurance models.

What are Insurtech jobs?

Insurtech jobs focus on the engineering of software and hardware, the collection and analysis of data, the implementation of cybersecurity, and the development of apps for insurance companies. The duties of IT and software professionals in the Insurtech industry depend on their area of specialization. The responsibilities of a data scientist, for example, revolve around analyzing data that they collect from smartphone apps, tracking devices, and wearables. Hardware and software engineers create these devices and apps and develop their data collection capacity and user interfaces. Software and web developers work on insurance sites and e-marketing tools for insurance companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an Insurtech role, and why are they important?

To excel in an Insurtech role, you typically need a strong background in insurance concepts, data analytics, and business or computer science, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with insurance management systems, cloud platforms, and programming languages like Python or SQL, as well as certifications such as CPCU or IT-related credentials, is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication set top performers apart, especially when bridging gaps between technical and business teams. These skills are vital for driving digital transformation, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering innovative solutions in a rapidly evolving insurance marketplace.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in Insurtech roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Insurtech roles often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory requirements, integrating new technologies with legacy insurance systems, and fostering collaboration between technical teams and traditional insurance experts. Addressing these challenges requires continuous learning about the evolving regulatory landscape, strong communication skills to bridge knowledge gaps between teams, and a proactive approach to change management. Many Insurtech teams benefit from agile methodologies and cross-disciplinary collaboration to drive innovation while maintaining compliance and client trust.

Job description

Akur8 is a fast-growing InsurTech scale-up on a mission to redefine insurance pricing and reserving through transparent, high-performance modeling technology.

Our SaaS platform uses transparent machine learning and predictive analytics to improve the speed, accuracy, and reliability of actuarial pricing and reserving.

Built by experienced actuarial, product, and R&D teams, Akur8’s proprietary algorithms enable insurers to generate insights up to 10x faster than traditional methods, while maintaining full explainability and regulatory confidence.

As our platform expands, we provide next-generation reserving capabilities, supporting an end-to-end approach to risk assessment and future claims anticipation.

Recognized globally, Akur8 has been featured in:

  • CB Insights’ Insurtech 50 - Top 50 InsurTech Companies 2025

  • CNBC’s World Top 150 InsurTech Companies

  • InsurTech100 Global - 100 Most Innovative Insurtech Companies

  • Professional Equality Index (2025 score of 97/100)

With 50+ nationalities across 8 global offices, we serve 400+ insurance clients on 4 continents, partnering with insurers in mature and highly regulated markets.

We are proud to be an equal opportunities employer, committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we evaluate all candidates fairly based on skills, experience, and professional merit.

Becoming an Pricing Actuary at Akur8 is the ideal opportunity to influence the usage of cutting edge advanced machine learning technology in the insurance industry and to have a visible effect on the product roadmap of one of the world’s foremost insurtech companies.

This position interacts with every team at Akur8 to various degrees: Sales, Product, R&D, Marketing, Engineering, and Leadership. You will be a subject matter expert and will act as a translator between all of these departments and the “language” of insurance, actuaries, and our clients. Externally, you will work with client contacts such as Heads of Pricing, Heads of Product, CTOs, Actuaries, and Data Scientists.

To be successful, a Pricing Actuary at Akur8 must be …

a teacher. You will lead proof of concepts with potential clients. During this process, you will need to clearly communicate complex actuarial concepts to both highly technical and non-technical audiences.

creative. Akur8’s software is extremely powerful for traditional actuarial tasks, but a Pricing Actuary is expected to think beyond traditional applications and identify creative approaches to use various Akur8 features to answer ad hoc actuarial questions.

a problem solver. During check-in meetings with clients, you will assist clients by quickly diagnosing any misalignments between an actuary’s potential use of the software and the underlying assumptions behind Akur8.

a visionary. Akur8’s software is in a constant state of development, and feedback from the Actuarial team is essential to inform Akur8’s roadmap. A Pricing Actuary is expected to identify potential features or offerings that are beneficial to both the software and the industry, and work with our product team to best define the underlying problem and evaluate potential solutions.

Additionally, you’ll also contribute to white papers and present at conferences or webinars to establish the leadership of Akur8 in the United States and other markets.

Traveling is required for this role for approximately 5 working days per month (including teambuilding trips to our Paris / North American offices, industry conferences, and onsite client meetings).

The successful candidate must meet each of the following criteria to be considered for this position:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a P&C / General insurance pricing role, as a Pricing Actuary, Actuarial Consultant, or equivalent; prior exposure to commercial and specialty lines is an advantage

  • Broad insurance industry knowledge, including ISO products / ISO ERC

  • Demonstrated experience recommending and filing rates, including developing rate indications, applying measurement methods and state-specific adjustments, and introducing or updating rating variables and factors.

  • Experience across the rate filing and approval lifecycle, including responding to objections from state Departments of Insurance and avoiding common issues that can delay approval.

  • Hands-on experience in actuarial ratemaking and rate deployment within a P&C or general insurance pricing environment.

  • Ability to understand insurance business imperatives and translate them into practical, software-driven solutions.

  • Curiosity and the ability to quickly understand prospects’ and clients’ ratemaking processes, identify their key requirements, and map them to functionality within the Akur8 platform.

  • Ability to present ratemaking analyses and recommendations clearly to stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise.

  • A basic understanding of Data Science and Machine Learning techniques for predictive modeling; given the nature of this role, no coding is required, though familiarity with Python or R is considered a strength.

  • Willingness and ability to travel for approximately one week per month, including visits to North American offices, client sites, and industry events

  • Native or near-native fluency in English

BONUS (preferable but not mandatory)

  • ACAS or FCAS credentials (or equivalent fellowship in a recognized actuarial body)

Preference will be given to applicants who can work from our New York office, but remote work is acceptable for strong applicants based anywhere in the Eastern or Central time zones.

As a newcomer, you'll be joining a diverse, highly skilled and motivated team, with a strong Tech DNA, colleagues that are eager to share their knowledge and passion.

We care about strong teamwork and a positive day-to-day environment. The team regularly connects through optional activities such as team lunches, sports, karaoke, or occasional after-work gatherings.

In addition to this, we will provide you with:

  • Competitive salary + annual bonus

  • Health insurance , Dental and Vision coverage (including spouse and family coverage)

  • Professional development & trainings

  • Team fun: regular company gatherings and team events
