DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Finance Department is a team of approximately 20 employees responsible for all financial and accounting matters of the Centers’ ten locations throughout the Los Angeles area. There are a wide variety of areas within the Finance department, including treasury, accounting, government grants, tax, contracts, and risk management. The Finance Department is a team of hardworking individuals who are committed to provide timely financial reporting, so that the Center can continue to provide much needed services to the community.
JOB SUMMARY: The Senior Accounting Manager will manage a set of accounting activities to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, Center policies and external and agency audits. This person will manage cash, the accounts receivable and payable functions, fixed assets, payroll allocations, monthly closing of accounts and preparation of reports in support of the financial statements. The Senior Accounting Manager will report to and work closely with the Senior Director of Finance & Accounting and others in the organization in analysis and reconciliation of accounts and in development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures, and controls. The ideal candidate possesses leadership capabilities, solid operational and technical accounting background and works proactively to drive results. This person is a self-starter, flexible, has a high level of integrity and is action and goal-oriented in a fast-paced, team-oriented, collaborative environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Manage the monthly financial close process, including ensuring all costs incurred are properly recorded, reviewing journal entries, account balance reconciliations and report preparation.
• Supervise the Accounts Payable Manager and AP staff and oversee accounts payables cycle.
• Participate in the ongoing development/establishment of accounting policies and procedures and operational strategies including the review and implementation of process and system changes.
• Ensure compliance with internal control policies.
• Interacts at all levels and with programs, Development, and administrative departments to produce timely, efficient, and accurate month-end close and all internal management and financial reporting through annual report.
• Facilitate ongoing grant-related federal, state and county audits.
• Responsible for hierarchy and scalability in chart of accounts and accuracy in the general ledger and financial statements and has authority over classification and booking of all transactions.
• Analyze the effect of statutory accounting practices and studies regulations and guidance to ensure correct application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
• Make recommendations for changes as needed and ensure that company policies and procedures are followed and establishes the proper. techniques to discover and prevent fraud.
• Prepare detailed journal entries and account analyses.
• Assist with compilation of information for preparation of the Center’s annual financial audit and tax returns.
• Work with Senior Director – Finance & Accounting to ensure overall coordination of all financial accounting activities through annual report.
• Help prepare explanations of financial statements variances to budget.
• Actively review and advise on financial/accounting processes.
• Provide support to ad hoc special projects for the Center as needed.
• Participate in staff meetings, planning meetings and other meetings as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
• Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people.
• A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business.
• Minimum 6 years’ experience in accounting; CPA preferred, but not required.
• Experience working in a large, multifaceted nonprofit strongly preferred.
• Self-starter who can independently identify potential problems and offer solutions.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint necessary; experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP accounting system highly desirable.
• Thorough knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.
• Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
• Ability to multi-task and quickly change gears in a fast-moving environment.
• Excellent supervisory skills and team player.
• Ability to provide superior internal/external customer service.
