Job Description

The United States Naval Academy Alumni Association & Foundation is searching for a Director, Research & Portfolio Management.

This position is based in historic Annapolis at our current offices located next to the beautiful grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy. In 2023, the staff of the Alumni Association & Foundation moved into the new Fluegel Alumni Center, which was built on the banks of College Creek overlooking the Naval Academy and downtown Annapolis.

This position pays a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, and may be eligible for an annual performance-based bonus, when applicable. The Director, Research & Portfolio Management, will lead a team that will lay the data-driven groundwork to help execute a comprehensive campaign that will support the Naval Academy's Strategic Plan 2030. The exempt position is part of an energized and engaged team, all of whom are driven to advance our mission and their own professional and personal growth. The position reports into the Vice President, Development. The team works closely together to think strategically, address opportunities and challenges, and search for ways to improve team and individual performance.

Responsibilities

Portfolio Management

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the Foundation's prospective donor tracking system, including assignments, prospective donor pools, and other identified constituents, to include the assignment of various model scores and ratings, and capturing all other pertinent financial data.
  • Create and maintain a robust prospective donor pool for future assignment in the principal gift, major gift, planned giving and leadership annual giving pools; lead routine portfolio review sessions.
  • Recalibrate portfolios as needed to maximize performance and elevate the highest priority prospective donors for management.
  • Regularly review development officer outreach efforts and statistics on moves management.
  • Maintain top campaign prospective donor lists to drive regular review sessions with Foundation leadership.
  • Lead as a subject matter expert by providing training to staff on portfolio management components of CRM and EverTrue.

Research

  • Lead a program that consistently identifies and rates prospective donors through comprehensive research and analysis.
  • Compose narrative research reports on selected prospects for senior staff, board members, volunteers, and Naval Academy leadership in a timely fashion.
  • Compose brief research reports for all USNAF events and others, as requested.
  • Ensure that research provided to leadership and gift officers is accurate, efficient, and actionable.
  • Work closely with Campaign Operations team in developing research briefings for regional campaign events, campaign briefings and one on one meetings for the CEO, EVP, VP and Regional Directors of Development.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 - 5 years of direct, higher education or non-profit portfolio management and research experience, preferably with experience in a management or leadership role
  • Exceptional project management skills with proficiency in managing requests, prioritizing tasks, and managing time.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships and work effectively with others, strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Expert knowledge in complex fundraising or sales database systems, preferably experience in Blackbaud CRM and EverTrue. Preferred knowledge of systems such as DonorSearch, aIdentified, and LexisNexis.
  • Approach each day with grit and optimism, work with enthusiasm, think with intellect, and act with honesty and humility.
  • Manage highly sensitive information and exercise a high degree of discretion; ensure adherence to professional standards and ethics of prospect research.
  • Dedication to growth and professional development with an openness to coaching and mentoring.
  • Eager to participate in professional associations, such as APRA and CASE
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Willingness to perform or assist other duties as assigned.
