Central Oregon Pediatric Associates (COPA) of Bend, Oregon, the largest pediatric practice in the region, is hiring a full time Spanish Language Medical Interpreter.

At COPA, the Spanish Language Medical Interpreter plays an integral role serving patients at our friendly and welcoming medical clinic for children of all ages. The Medical Interpreter provides accurate Spanish interpreting services to COPA patients, families and staff throughout the COPA experience, in all departments, both in person and by phone. This includes critical medical information in direct service to physicians and/or other health care providers who are seeing patient appointments at all COPA clinics. The Medical Interpreter assists in scheduling appointments.

COPA provides language assistance free of charge to all limited-English speaking patients. The Medical Interpreter plays a key role in COPA's ability to provide family friendly patient service where all are welcome, providing each family with the ultimate positive experience from the beginning to end of their visit at COPA.

The role of the Spanish Language Medical Interpreter will include but is not limited to the following duties:
  • Provides Spanish thorough and accurate interpretation for patients, families, providers and staff during in person visits and by phone in COPA's clinics.
  • Assists in translating medical text from English to Spanish on behalf of internal and external customers; may translate patient education information as specifically requested.
  • Participates, as a condition of assignment, in continuing annual medical interpreter/ translator training provided through COPA
  • Performs duties following the guidelines provided by the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care.
  • Improves patient experience/satisfaction: The Medical Interpreter works in conjunction with the Medical team to ensure patients have a clear understanding of medical diagnosis as well as the treatment plan that will be implemented for them. They ensure that the communication between the patient and Medical team flows clearly and smoothly to prevent disparities and errors. The Medical Interpreter also enables the Medical Team and the Patient to create a bond of trust by serving as a liaison between both parties.
  • Provides patient education: The Medical Interpreter will strive to educate families on critical safety information such as 24/7 Pediatric nurse advice numbers, Poison Control and other community resources.
  • Improves preventative care compliance: The Medical Interpreter educates the parents on Well Child Check (WCC) importance as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). They provide information about the Well Child Check and immunization schedule and help ensure the child stays up to date on their Well Child Check (WCC) appointments.
  • Assists patients in navigating resources at COPA and in the Community and works in conjunction with the Referral Department and Care Coordination team to ensure patients follow up with specialty care needed outside of COPA as recommended by the Primary Care Provider.
  • Follows COPA policy and procedures of the Interpreter Services and Patient Operations teams.
  • Performs other related work as directed by immediate supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certification:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of approved Medical Interpreting program recognized by the Oregon Health Authority required.
  • At time of application, candidates must meet Oregon Health Care Interpreter Program Requirements as outlined by the Oregon Health Authority. https://www.oregon.gov/oha/OEI/Documents/Oregon%20Health%20Care%20Interpreter%20Program%20Requirements_.pdf

Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years of customer service required; medical interpreting and medical office experience preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English. Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures. Ability to translate critical medical information precisely and accurately from English to Spanish. Spanish language written translation skills.
  • Clerical experience in clinical setting desired. Intermediate and advanced phone, verbal and computer skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision. Flexibility and willingness to handle a variety of tasks. Ability to handle the changing needs of the department and organization.
  • Epic EMR experience preferred. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Requirements:
  • Use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level in person, over the telephone or through use of other required technology. Sitting or standing for long periods of time. Frequent repetitive motion includes computer keyboard use, reaching with hands and arms, and walking. Occasional lifting and or moving up to 30 pounds and on rare occasion up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include viewing computer monitor for long periods of time, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Working Conditions:
  • Work inside in a general medical office setting with ergonomically configured equipment.
  • The employee is subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to mechanical parts and chemicals including odors. The employee has been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials, therefore are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with specification for preventing contact with the above materials.
  • Travel between COPA clinics and business office as required.
