Job Summary of the Vice President, Research & Development

The VP R&D leads a product development team focused on the development and commercialization of technologies for peripheral nerve repair. This position is overall responsible for leading and owning the discovery and development of biologic, medical device and/or pharmaceutical products to treat peripheral nerve injuries and for continued process development and product support. The person in this role is a visionary who excels in advancing the growth of the business through innovative technical solutions. Works collaboratively with cross functional teams within the organization to take new product and process improvement ideas from the Company's strategic roadmap and translates them into projects while complying with all appropriate regulatory requirements and guidelines. Ensures day to day execution of development efforts is being managed appropriately through leaders on the team and leads the transfer of developed products/processes to Operations. Position reports directly to the Chief R&D Officer and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and plays an important role as the lead technical interface to the Board of Directors and external stakeholders and partners. Fosters effective relationships with other functional groups and with external collaborators including surgeons, regulatory and/or scientific consultants, CROs, and testing facilities.

Requirements of the Vice President, Research & Development
  • PhD/MS in Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or similar academic background with systems development experience, or engineering/physics
  • 15+ years of experience in senior R&D leadership roles supervising other leaders
  • Prior experience leading FDA regulated product development projects through launch
  • Minimum 10 years' experience as an individual contributor or first line manager contributing to successful new product launches in life sciences and/or medical device
  • Experience collaborating with executive teams on business planning and strategic product management
  • Experience adapting and implementing FDA oriented product development processes to a company environment and drive on-schedule and on-budget product development
  • Exceptional and proven scientific thought leader that has successfully led teams that have
    developed core technologies that have consequently been commercially launched in life science markets
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written as this position must be able to convey highly technical information in an easily understood manner by customers and internal partners

Responsibilities of the Vice President, Research & Development

The specific duties of the Vice President, Research & Development include but are not limited to:
  • Leads all discovery and exploration efforts, research, product development, and transfer to manufacturing on budget and on schedule delivery of products
  • Works with program management to develop, implement, execute and ensure compliance with program management and product development processes that meets all FDA and foreign registration requirements
  • Evaluates existing portfolio of products and leads the strategic development of future state pipeline to ensure company growth
  • Develops other operating mechanisms and processes to ensure effective communications and operations within R&D and with other functional areas
  • Collaborates with members of the Commercial team to identify opportunities for developing solutions needed in the marketplace
  • Collaborates closely with Upstream Marketing to identify new opportunities that meet Business and Clinical needs
  • Collaborates with NBD to assess external technologies and product opportunities as potential in-licensing or acquisition opportunities
  • Leads the R&D work preparing the information needed by Board of Directors, Investors or other senior members of leadership
  • Prepares and makes presentation to the Executive Team and Board of Directors as necessary
  • Represents the Company externally at conference presentations or other relevant meetings as necessary
  • In collaboration with Chief Strategy Officer and other members of the senior leadership team, continues development and execution of the company strategy, including working with R&D leaders to develop tactics in support of the strategy
  • Ensures that new assays and platform technologies are added to the pipeline to expand the menu on the existing platforms and to open new applications of the base technology
  • In close collaboration with in-house Counsel, is a key driver of the Company's IP strategy
  • Insures continued assessment of external technology and remains current with new development and trends in the industry including ongoing investigation and evaluation of related research, products and technology licensing opportunities as well as gathering competitive intelligence
  • Provides guidance and direction to members of the R&D\ team including coaching, performance management and career development
  • Champions the company's efforts to stay on the forefront of technology advancement in peripheral nerve repair and creates opportunities for education
