Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) is an environmental and community nonprofit with a mission to help people and nature thrive. We partner with neighborhoods, local government, universities, community groups, and businesses to achieve our vision of an Indianapolis that is loved, cared for, and ecologically rich. We work with about 18,000 volunteers each year to plant trees and native landscapes, organize litter cleanups, turn vacant lots into pocket parks, restore habitat, and educate and employ youth.

Job Title: Manager of Volunteer Programs

Full-time/Part-time: Full-time

Salary: $47,800 - $51,000 annually

Purpose:

The Manager of Volunteer Programs leads KIB’s volunteer recruitment, engagement, and retention efforts, ensuring an exceptional volunteer experience while supporting organizational goals. This position oversees volunteer systems, communications, data management, and specialized volunteer programs, while partnering across departments to strengthen community engagement and volunteer participation. The Manager works independently while collaborating closely with Director of Stakeholder Engagement, colleagues across the organization, community partners, and volunteers to strengthen volunteer participation, expand community partnerships, and advance KIB’s mission.


Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities:


Volunteer Engagement & Leadership

  • Develop and implement volunteer recruitment, engagement, recognition, and retention strategies to grow participation across KIB programs
  • Evaluate volunteer programs and recommend improvements based on participation data and volunteer feedback
  • Lead volunteer logistics and staffing for organization-wide projects and special events

Volunteer Recruitment and Community Partnerships

  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners, volunteer groups, and returning volunteers
  • Recruit, train, support, and recognize volunteers
  • Coordinate volunteer staffing to meet organizational and departmental needs

Volunteer Operations & Communications

  • Manage volunteer systems, registration processes, project requests, databases, and related technology platforms
  • Oversee volunteer communications and promotion through internal and external channels
  • Maintain volunteer records, participation metrics, and reporting for organizational needs and grants

Ambassador and Tree Tender Programs

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of Ambassador and Tree Tender Programs
  • Coordinate educational opportunities, appreciation events, and ongoing volunteer communications
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and implement continuous improvements

Collaboration & Organizational Support

  • Partner with program managers and internal departments to coordinate volunteer support
  • Collaborate with Development, Community Engagement, and Marketing to expand volunteer opportunities
  • Contribute to organization-wide initiatives
  • Assist with any additional duties as assigned in service to the mission of KIB

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build relationships across diverse communities
  • Demonstrate experience with volunteer recruitment, engagement, and program management
  • Strong project management, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with data tracking, reporting, and program evaluation
  • Proficiency with Salesforce CRM, Formstack, Microsoft Office Suite, or similar database systems
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and facilitate groups of volunteers in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Experience presenting to large groups and representing an organization in community settings
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and adaptable
  • Understanding and appreciation of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Proficiency in a language other than English (e.g., Spanish, Haitian Creole, Chin, Tagalog) preferred

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • 3-5 years of volunteer management, community engagement, nonprofit program, management, or related experience preferred
  • Experience with Salesforce CRM and volunteer management software preferred

Requirements:

  • Physically able to lift heavy items (up to 50lbs.) consistently throughout a regular workday
  • Comfort walking, standing for long hours, and withstanding working outdoors in all seasons
  • Ability to accommodate seasonal nature of workload, including working weekends and/or evenings as needed
  • Valid driver’s license with six points or fewer
  • Ability to or willingness to learn how to pull a 25’ long trailer behind a full-sized pickup truck
