This position ensures programs run smoothly, customers receive excellent service, and staff have the support needed for successful shift operations. Whether supporting summer camps, fitness classes, facility rentals, or open recreation, this is a great opportunity for individuals with leadership experience who enjoy working in fast-paced community settings. The Opportunity Managers on Duty work during peak hours-primarily evenings and weekends-at one or more recreation or aquatics sites.

Shifts are available year-round or seasonally, with varying hours depending on facility needs. In this role, you will: Supervise Recreation Leaders and volunteers during your assigned shift Oversee facility operations, enforce policies, and ensure safe and timely execution of activities Respond to customer questions and concerns with professionalism and care Operate a point-of-sale system and follow cash-handling procedures Coach and support staff in real time to promote a positive team culture Maintain records including attendance, facility logs, and incident reports Perform light cleaning and assist with daily facility upkeep Communicate effectively with staff and report to a Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Manager Your Impact As a Manager on Duty, you help create a safe, welcoming, and well-organized environment where residents of all ages can enjoy programs, build community, and stay active. You'll gain experience in leadership, customer service, and facility management-key skills that support career growth in recreation, education, public service, and more.

What You Should Bring The ideal candidate is dependable, flexible, and confident leading a team in a public-facing role. You should be comfortable working independently, staying calm under pressure, and adapting to the needs of a busy facility. About the Department The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) enriches the lives of Alexandria residents through diverse programming, well-maintained public spaces, and inclusive cultural activities.

RPCA is nationally accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), having met rigorous best-practice standards in the industry. Minimum & Additional Requirements High School Diploma and three (3) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training.

Preferred Qualifications Additional Requirements First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain upon hire) National Pool Operator certification (or ability to obtain upon hire) Valid driver's license Preferred Qualifications At least 18 years of age At least 6 months of experience supervising staff or volunteers Availability to work evenings and weekends, year-round or seasonally Bilingual (Spanish or Amharic) preferred Comfortable working in fast-paced indoor or outdoor settings with variable weather Pool Operator's License preferred Able to lift and carry items up to 40 pounds and remain on your feet for extended periods Notes This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and drug screening prior to employment.
