What does a software development manager do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What does a software development manager do?

A Software Development Manager oversees teams of software engineers to ensure successful planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and facilitate communication between team members and stakeholders. Additionally, they mentor developers, set technical standards, and help align software initiatives with business objectives. Their role balances technical expertise with leadership and project management responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development manager?

To thrive as a Software Development Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, leadership experience, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and sometimes certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to motivate and mentor teams are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure successful project delivery, foster team development, and align technical efforts with business goals.

How does a software development manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

Software Development Manager Job Responsibilities:

In this role, you will lead a small, high-impact software engineering team responsible for the design, development, reliability, and continued modernization of Healing Partners’ internally developed healthcare platform. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines people management, technical direction, stakeholder communication, production support, and engineering process improvement.

The successful candidate will directly manage software developers, conduct performance reviews and one-on-one meetings, establish clear priorities, and ensure predictable delivery. This individual will remain technically engaged through architecture, code reviews, troubleshooting, and approximately 30-40% hands-on development. The role will also formalize DevOps and software engineering practices by improving CI/CD, deployment automation, monitoring, documentation, incident response, and the management of scheduled and ad hoc operational processes.

  • Stellar customer service skills are required to perform this job well. Listening, observational, and communication skills are essential while balancing responsiveness with sound prioritization and sustainable delivery.
  • Directly manage and develop a team of software engineers, including performance reviews, regular one-on-one meetings, coaching, career development, accountability, workload management, and hiring recommendations.
  • Lead stakeholder meetings, translate business needs into actionable technical work, communicate status and risk clearly, establish realistic timelines, and respectfully challenge or defer requests when priorities or capacity require tradeoffs.
  • Own the team’s intake and prioritization process, ensuring that new work is evaluated against production stability, regulatory impact, revenue impact, technical risk, and available capacity.
  • Lead all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, technical design, coding, peer review, testing, deployment, documentation, support, and continuous improvement.
  • Remain technically engaged and contribute approximately 30-40% of time to hands-on development, complex troubleshooting, proof-of-concept work, architecture, and high-risk changes.
  • Provide technical leadership through architecture reviews, code reviews, development standards, secure coding practices, design guidance, and mentorship.
  • Develop and maintain responsive web applications and services using technologies such as JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js/Express, HTML, CSS, REST APIs, MongoDB, and SQL-based databases.
  • Lead production support and incident response for mission-critical applications, including rapid restoration of service, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and clear communication to stakeholders.
  • Partner with Infrastructure and Information Security to improve application monitoring, alerting, backups, recovery procedures, service-account usage, secrets management, Linux/Azure operations, and environmental reliability.
  • Formalize DevOps practices by implementing or improving CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, repeatable deployments, release controls, rollback procedures, source-control standards, and change documentation.
  • Inventory, document, and improve scheduled jobs, integrations, scripts, ad hoc reports, data imports/exports, and manual operational processes. Automate or orchestrate processes when doing so reduces risk and improves reliability.
  • Ensure high-risk data integrations and production write processes include appropriate validation, peer review, approvals, logging, reconciliation, and recovery procedures.
  • Reduce single points of failure through cross-training, runbooks, shared ownership, documentation, and standardized processes that do not depend on individual employee accounts or tribal knowledge.
  • Develop data analytics and reporting solutions of varying complexity and deliver data through web applications, data extracts, dashboards, spreadsheets, and other appropriate formats.
  • Maintain strong partnerships with clinical, operational, revenue-cycle, executive, and IT stakeholders while protecting the development team from unmanaged or conflicting work.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies, tools, security practices, and software engineering methods, and apply relevant improvements to the environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Software Development Manager Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience or relevant certifications may be considered.
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, including recent hands-on experience with production web applications.
  • 3+ years of formal people-management experience or equivalent direct responsibility for performance management, mentoring, technical leadership, and team delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a small software engineering team in a player-coach capacity.
  • Strong experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js/Express, REST APIs, HTML, and CSS.
  • Experience building and maintaining both non-relational databases such as MongoDB and relational databases such as SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience supporting Linux-hosted and cloud-hosted production applications; Microsoft Azure experience is preferred.
  • Experience implementing or improving CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, source-control practices, and production monitoring.
  • Experience with Git and Agile/Scrum methodologies; practical judgment is valued over rigid adherence to a specific framework.
  • Experience with healthcare applications, revenue-cycle systems, data integrations, SFTP, or regulated environments is preferred.
  • Cybersecurity knowledge, including secure secrets management, least privilege, logging, and secure development practices, is a plus.
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to facilitate meetings, resolve ambiguity, make decisions, and keep discussions productive.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts, risk, timelines, and tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders and executive leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing requests, say “not yet” when appropriate, and require stakeholders to make clear tradeoff decisions.
  • Ability to evaluate software engineering performance, code quality, technical judgment, delivery effectiveness, ownership, and professional development needs.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, modern web development, APIs, databases, application security, testing, deployment, observability, and operational reliability.
  • Calm, structured, and decisive approach to critical production incidents.
  • Strong organizational and project-leadership skills with the ability to improve predictability without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Customer-service mindset combined with the judgment to protect system stability, data integrity, security, and team capacity.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership, identify hidden risks, and build sustainable processes in an evolving environment.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to receive feedback, and commitment to continuous learning and team improvement.
Physical Requirements:
  • Talk, hear, and communicate with people over the telephone;
  • Use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone;
  • View computer screens for extended periods of time;
  • Sit at a desk for extended periods of time;
Work Environment:
  • This role offers flexibility for remote work, with periodic onsite collaboration at Healing Partners’ headquarters in Sparks, Maryland and other locations as business needs require.
  • Occasional evening, weekend, or after-hours work may be required for planned deployments, maintenance, or critical production incidents.
  • The role requires participation in an escalation model for mission-critical application issues; the expectation is to build sustainable team coverage rather than rely on continuous individual availability.
Job Type:

Salary:

$165,000-180,000

Schedule:
