What are Senior Legal Operations professionals?

Senior Legal Operations professionals are experienced specialists who oversee and optimize the business and administrative aspects of a legal department. They focus on streamlining processes, managing budgets, implementing legal technology, and improving overall efficiency. Their role often includes project management, vendor management, data analysis, and supporting legal teams in delivering high-quality services. By doing so, they help legal departments function more effectively and align with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Legal Operations professional, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Legal Operations professional, you need a strong background in legal processes, project management, and financial acumen, often supported by a bachelor's degree and experience in legal operations or law. Familiarity with legal technology platforms (such as contract management systems, e-billing, and document management tools) and certifications like CLOC or Lean Six Sigma are highly valuable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and change management skills help drive team effectiveness and foster cross-department collaboration. These abilities ensure efficient legal service delivery, cost control, and the successful alignment of legal operations with organizational goals.

How does a Senior Legal Operations professional typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Senior Legal Operations professionals regularly partner with departments such as IT, Finance, Procurement, and HR to streamline processes and ensure that legal services are delivered efficiently. This role often involves cross-functional meetings to align legal technology initiatives, manage budgets, oversee vendor contracts, and support compliance efforts. By fostering strong relationships across departments, Senior Legal Operations professionals help bridge gaps between legal and business teams, ensuring that organizational goals are met while mitigating risk.

Job description

As Senior Legal Operations Specialist, Compliance Programs & Controls, you will help design, operate, and improve compliance processes, controls, and technology-enabled workflows across Honeywell's Corporate Legal function. This role will focus on trade diversion risk mitigation, export and sanctions compliance operations, third-party due diligence, and legal transformation initiatives that improve consistency, visibility, and execution across the enterprise.

You will report directly to our Senior Director of Legal Operations, and work out of our Charlotte, NC location on a hybrid work schedule. You will work closely with Legal, Compliance, IT, Finance, and business stakeholders to convert compliance requirements into scalable operating processes and controls.

You will improve compliance operations by standardizing workflows, translating regulatory requirements into scalable controls, supporting automation, and measuring program performance through data and reporting. Success in this role will be measured by improved control effectiveness, clearer workflows, timely execution of compliance program milestones, stakeholder adoption, and better visibility through reporting and metrics.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain and enhance the end-to-end trade diversion risk mitigation program, including corporate policy, roles and responsibilities, red flag identification methodology, escalation framework, control, audit, employee training, and jurisdiction-specific playbooks (with emphasis on Russia, the BIS Affiliates Rule, and high-risk transshipment corridors)
  • Maintain and improve trade compliance risk models, dashboards, and heat maps for diversion, export control, and sanctions risk, using data to support prioritization, escalation, and control design
  • Draft business requirements documents and translate compliance requirements into control points, system logic, and automation requirements, including subscription workflows, beneficial ownership screening, vessel IMO screening, and third-party due diligence workflows.
  • Partner with IT, Legal, and business stakeholders on SAP/GTS implementations, including requirements gathering, configuration input, user acceptance testing, go-live readiness, post-implementation validation, and audit support
  • Support the third-party due diligence strategy and Certa workflow design, including intake, risk tiering, screening logic, escalation paths, reporting, and process improvement
  • Manage relationships with internal stakeholders and external technology, data, and compliance service providers to support system performance, issue resolution, and program execution
  • Partner across Legal, Compliance, IT, Finance, and business teams to develop and mature Legal Global Design Models, including standardized processes, controls, roles, and supporting technology
  • Drive change management, including communications and training development
  • Support legal operations optimization initiatives, including process mapping, workload analysis, operating model improvements, metric development, and implementation planning
  • Identify process gaps, recommend practical improvements, and coordinate implementation across functional and business stakeholders
