What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Engineer, you need a strong combination of technical knowledge in engineering or a related field and proven sales acumen, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, as well as proficiency in technical presentation tools and product-specific certifications, is typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to build client relationships are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications enable Sales Engineers to effectively bridge the gap between customer needs and technical solutions, driving both client satisfaction and business growth.

What is a sales engineer?

Sales Engineers are professionals who combine technical knowledge of products or services with strong sales skills to provide solutions to customers. They work closely with both the sales and engineering teams to understand customer needs, demonstrate products, and explain the technical benefits. Sales Engineers often assist with product design and customization, and help customers understand how a product or service can solve their specific problems. Their role typically involves both pre-sales and post-sales support, making them key to building strong customer relationships.

What does a sales engineer do?

As a sales engineer, your responsibilities are to serve as a technical advisor to prospective clients. Your duties may include helping customers decide what to buy for a project, demonstrating the use of products, providing instruction and support, and even performing installations. Companies typically ask sales engineers to sell complex technological or scientific products, which requires extensive knowledge of the parts and functions of each product, as well as related processes. You may also be asked to travel on a regular basis, present information to large crowds, or work irregular hours to meet sales goals and the needs of clients.

How do sales engineers typically collaborate with both technical teams and clients during the sales process?

Sales Engineers act as a vital bridge between technical teams and clients, often working closely with product managers, engineers, and sales representatives. They translate complex technical information into clear, client-friendly solutions and ensure that client requirements are accurately communicated to internal teams. This collaboration involves participating in product demonstrations, technical presentations, and solution design meetings. By fostering effective communication between stakeholders, Sales Engineers help tailor offerings to client needs and drive successful sales outcomes.

Our solutions help utilities, cooperatives, municipalities, and industrial facilities operate safely, reliably, and efficiently. We are hiring an Outside Sales Professional to support customers across Oregon. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building relationships, solving customer problems, and managing a diverse territory.
As a Sales Engineer - Power Systems a typical day might include the following:
  • Develop new business by identifying, engaging, and building relationships with prospective customers across Oregon.
  • Grow existing accounts by understanding customer challenges and helping them select SEL solutions that provide long-term system value.
  • Plan and execute a territory strategy, maintaining organized notes, clean CRM entries, and clear next steps for every customer.
  • Engage customers consistently through scheduled visits, follow-up conversations, technical discussions, and coordination with application engineers.
  • Support pilot and evaluation activities for SEL protection, automation, and communication solutions by helping customers understand the process and keeping progress on track.
  • Coordinate internally with engineering, sales leadership, commercial teams, and operations staff to ensure a consistent and positive customer experience.
  • Provide accurate sales forecasts and communicate progress toward goals with clarity and ownership.
  • Gather and share market insights on customer needs, system issues, and industry trends to support regional strategy.
  • Assist with customer concerns by facilitating communication and connecting the right SEL resources.
  • Use CRM tools to maintain accurate customer history, opportunity status, and activity documentation.

This job might be for you if you:
  • Have 2+ years of successful B2B sales experience in a technical, industrial, or service-oriented field, OR relevant customer-facing experience with strong sales aptitude.
  • Have strong communication skills and the ability to build trust with customers in utilities, municipalities, co-ops, and industrial sectors.
  • Are willing and able to learn technical concepts through SEL's training and mentorship.
  • Are organized with consistent follow-through; comfortable managing multiple customer relationships.
  • Have the ability to travel approximately 75% across Oregon.
  • Are able to work independently while collaborating closely with teammates and engineering resources.

Other preferred qualifications are...
  • Experience in technical sales, field service, industrial operations, controls, or systems integration. SEL will provide technical training and mentoring needed to understand and apply our product solutions, but knowledge of power systems is preferred.
  • Exposure to electrical systems, industrial automation, SCADA, PLCs, communications, or power system operations.
  • Familiarity with medium-voltage equipment, protection concepts, or utility/industrial processes.
  • Experience using CRM tools to manage territory, track activities, and maintain disciplined sales processes.
  • Technical curiosity with demonstrated ability to learn new concepts quickly including communications, controls, or protection fundamentals.
  • Background in military technical roles, electrical trades, apprenticeships, lineman/journeyman programs, instrumentation, automation, or communications technology.
