Duties
Help
If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing administrative support to the United States Attorney (USA) and First Assistant U.S. Attorney (FAUSA) of the Northern District of Indiana. Typical work assignments will include:
- Maintains a confidential relationship with the USA and FAUSA
- Manages and oversees the day-to-day activities of the immediate office of the USA/FAUSA.
- Exercises control over the USA's calendar for all appointments, meetings, engagements, and conferences.
- Establishes priorities and arranges, shifts, or cancels appointments and meetings.
- Screens telephone calls and visitors desiring to speak with the USA/FAUSA, exercising independent judgment and discretion to determine the nature, purpose, and urgency of the matter.
- Reads, screens, and controls incoming mail and independently deals with matters addressed to the USA that do not require his/her personal attention.
- Makes travel arrangements for the USA/FAUSA.
- Produces a variety of written documents utilizing varied and advanced functions in one or more types of office automation software.
- Ensures documents are in the proper format, and that spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar has been verified, and consults with document author to resolve any questionable material.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
- Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
- You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the experience requirements for the GS-8 grade level as described below:
Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience providing direct clerical and administrative support to professionals in a legal office setting; receiving and screening telephone calls and visitors in an administrative office setting; reading, screening, and controlling incoming mail by independently addressing matters or routing matters to other appropriate staff; and producing a variety of written documents utilizing varied and advanced functions in one or more types of office automation software.
To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)-The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
