This can include virtual event coordination, managing online memorials, handling administrative tasks, or providing customer support for grieving families. Job description

Build and Lead a Specialized Tax Practice - FULLY REMOTE

Compensation: $175K + Bonus

A growing consulting and financial services firm is seeking an experienced Tax Director to build and lead a new tax practice serving closely held businesses throughout the United States. This is an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial tax leader who wants to create something from the ground up. You will have the autonomy to establish the practice’s technology, workflows, engagement structure, pricing strategy, quality-control standards, and client-service model.

The firm already provides bookkeeping, consulting, valuation, succession-planning, and M&A support to an established portfolio of clients. The Tax Director will build upon these existing relationships, creating a seamless transition from bookkeeping and financial reporting to tax compliance and proactive advisory services.

What You’ll Do

  • Build, launch, and lead a specialized tax practice
  • Prepare and review business tax returns, including Forms 1120-S, 1065, and 1120.
  • Prepare and review individual tax returns for business owners, including Form 1040.
  • Partner with the bookkeeping team to create an efficient, accurate bookkeeping-to-tax handoff.
  • Deliver proactive tax planning and advisory services, including quarterly estimates, year-end projections, entity-structure guidance, and reasonable-compensation and distribution planning.
  • Serve as the firm’s signing preparer of record and EFIN responsible official.
  • Establish quality-control procedures, including a mandatory second-review process before returns are filed.
  • Advise consulting, valuation, and M&A teams on the tax implications of acquisitions, ownership transitions, succession plans, and business sales.
  • Design and manage seasonal or offshore preparation support, allowing the Tax Director to focus on review, planning, strategy, and client relationships.
  • Establish engagement scopes, service packages, and pricing strategies.
  • Select and implement tax software, workflow tools, and scalable practice-management processes.
  • Develop and maintain written data-security policies consistent with IRS safeguards and firm privacy standards.
  • Build trusted, long-term relationships with business owners and become a proactive advisor throughout the year.
  • Manage filing deadlines and maintain exceptional service standards during tax season.

What You’ll Bring

  • Active CPA license in good standing.
  • Valid PTIN.
  • Ability to successfully complete the IRS e-file provider suitability process and serve as an EFIN responsible official.
  • At least five years of experience preparing and reviewing tax returns for closely held businesses.
  • Strong experience with S corporations, partnerships, corporations, and business-owner individual returns.
  • Multi-state tax return experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret financial statements.
  • Experience working with QuickBooks Online or a comparable accounting platform.
  • Demonstrated success managing client relationships and communicating complex tax matters clearly.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines during filing season.
  • A collaborative, entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to build processes and make thoughtful decisions independently.

Experience That Will Set You Apart

The strongest candidates may also bring one or more of the following:

  • Advanced trust and estate taxation experience, including Form 1041, qualified funeral trusts, or perpetual care funds.
  • Experience launching, building, or systematizing a tax practice.
  • Certified Exit Planning Advisor, or CEPA, designation.
  • Certified Exit Planner, or CExP, designation.
  • Accredited in Business Valuation, or ABV, credential.
  • Certified Valuation Analyst, or CVA, credential.
  • Personal Financial Specialist, or PFS, credential.
  • Certified Financial Planner, or CFP, certification.
  • Accredited Estate Planner, or AEP, designation.
  • Experience supporting business sales, succession planning, or M&A transactions.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Build and shape a tax practice rather than inheriting a rigid operating model.
  • Step into an established client ecosystem with strong bookkeeping and consulting relationships.
  • Focus on a unique and relationship-driven industry with meaningful opportunities for specialization.
  • Work closely with senior leadership and influence the firm’s long-term growth strategy.
  • Expand beyond compliance into tax planning, valuation, succession, and transaction advisory.
  • Create the technology, processes, and team structure needed to support a scalable practice.
  • Enjoy the flexibility of working remotely
