Job description

Ziegler Energy Solutions, a Ziegler company, is seeking a Sales Engineer to lead technical sales for commercial, industrial, and utility scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across Illinois. We develop advanced BESS solutions and complementary technologies including large UPS systems, solar PV, and EV charging infrastructure.
In this role, you will serve as the technical sales lead for the state, supporting both turnkey project development and equipment only engagements. You will also help identify early opportunities across our broader distributed energy portfolio. This position is open until filled.
Location: Remote (Must reside in Illinois due to regional travel and customer engagement requirements)

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical sales for C&I and utilityscale BESS projects.
  • Develop scopes, preliminary engineering, and conceptual designs.
  • Engage early with customers, consultants, utilities, and EPCs to influence the basis of design, using bid specifications, utility requirements, and project documentation to guide system architecture.
  • Conduct site assessments, feasibility reviews, and DER introductions.
  • Interpret RFPs, bid specifications, utility interconnection requirements, and engineering drawings.
  • Prepare proposals, layouts, singleline diagrams, and technical narratives.
  • Collaborate with development, engineering, project management, and electrical sub-contractors.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-7+ years in technical sales within BESS, UPS, microgrids, or power systems
  • Ability to interpret RFPs, bid specifications, technical drawings, and utility requirements
  • Strong understanding of BESS components (PCS/inverters, BMS/EMS, safety systems, balanceofplant)
  • Familiarity with large criticalpower systems
  • Excellent communication and customerfacing skills
  • Must reside in Illinois; willingness to travel up to 70% within the state
  • Must have and maintain a clean driving record to meet company insurability standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or related field.
  • Experience in both turnkey development and equipmentonly strategies.
  • Familiarity with solar PV, EV charging, and multiple DER systems.
  • Working knowledge of UL 9540/9540A, NFPA 855, NEC, IEEE 1547.
  • Ability to support basic financial modeling (IRR, NPV, LCOS).

The total compensation (base plus incentive) for this position is

$90,700.00 to $136,000.00

Starting wage is dependent on skills, experience, and education. Along with competitive pay, full time positions are benefits eligible which includes:
