Familiarity with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, as well as electronic health records (EHR) platforms, is typically required. What is a Per Diem Medical Coding job?

A Per Diem Medical Coding job is a flexible, as-needed position where a medical coder reviews and assigns standardized codes to diagnoses and procedures for billing and documentation purposes. These roles often support healthcare facilities during peak periods, staffing shortages, or special projects. Per diem coders typically work remotely or on-site, depending on the employer's needs. This position is ideal for experienced coders seeking flexibility without a full-time commitment.

What are the typical work schedules and expectations for per diem medical coding roles?

Per diem medical coding positions offer flexible schedules that can vary depending on the employer's needs and your availability. Many per diem coders work on an as-needed basis, filling in for staff shortages, handling overflow, or supporting special projects, which makes it ideal for those seeking a non-traditional or supplemental work schedule. You may be expected to meet productivity and accuracy standards similar to full-time staff, and the ability to quickly adapt to new workflows or documentation systems is important. While most of the work is independent, you may collaborate with healthcare providers or other coders to clarify documentation or resolve discrepancies.

Is AI replacing medical coders?

AI technology is increasingly used to assist medical coders by automating routine coding tasks and improving accuracy. However, human medical coders are still essential for complex cases, quality assurance, and interpreting nuanced clinical information, making AI a tool that complements rather than replaces their role.
