A Per Diem Medical Coding job is a flexible, as-needed position where a medical coder reviews and assigns standardized codes to diagnoses and procedures for billing and documentation purposes. These roles often support healthcare facilities during peak periods, staffing shortages, or special projects. Per diem coders typically work remotely or on-site, depending on the employer's needs. This position is ideal for experienced coders seeking flexibility without a full-time commitment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Per Diem Medical Coding position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Medical Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare coding systems, often supported by completion of a coding program and certification such as CPC or CCS. Familiarity with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, as well as electronic health records (EHR) platforms, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work independently are key soft skills for success in per diem roles. These skills ensure codes are entered accurately and efficiently, supporting correct billing and compliance in healthcare organizations.

Per diem medical coding positions offer flexible schedules that can vary depending on the employer's needs and your availability.
