Job description

DEPARTMENT: Facilities and Planning
REPORTS TO: Manager, Special Construction & Metals
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
POSITION TYPE: Part-Time/Medical Benefit Eligible
SUMMARY: The Special Construction Technician will perform all aspects of exhibit, thematic enhancement and maintenance, throughout the Saint Louis Zoo. As an active member of Facilities Management, this position will support the Zoo's mission and advocate the Zoo's core values and three keys.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following reflects Management's definition of essential functions for this position but does not restrict additional assigned tasks. Management recognizes the broad scope of the desired skill set. Applicants are not expected to possess full proficiency in all listed duties and responsibilities at the time of application. The successful candidate will demonstrate prior knowledge and experience in a subset of these requirements. Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position.
  • Preform detail painting tasks such as carousel animal repairs, event décor items, mural work, thematic and faux painting.
  • Design, fabricate and repair animal enrichment tools, exhibit structures and themed artificial elements such as trees, vines and rocks using a variety of materials such as concrete, fiberglass, epoxy, polyester and other resins, urethanes, plastic, wood and metal.
  • Basic carpentry/fabrication tasks such as cabinetry/shelving fabrication and metal preparation.
  • Perform masonry and concrete work such as the altering and repairing of brick, stone, plaster, terra-cotta, structures or surfaces, shotcrete, gunite, foundations, footings, flatwork and texturing.
  • Utilize computer aided software for designing and layout of future projects and project management.
  • Utilize the CMMS work order system for work scheduling, preventative maintenance programs, and record keeping.
  • Ensure that proper safety guidelines and usage of PPE are followed at all times.
  • Know and understand the Zoo employee handbook and adhere to all stated disciplinary actions and personnel policies.
  • Work in close collaboration with all Zoo internal departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervision of other employees is not the responsibility of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Fabrication experience is preferred.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum three years of experience in related fields.
  • Possession or the ability to obtain OSHA 10/30-Hour Training certification.
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards.
  • Good attendance record and work ethic.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  • Possession or the ability to obtain a Missouri Class E Driver's License is required for residents of Missouri.
  • All successful candidates for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and a drug test. As this is a safety-sensitive role, a negative drug test result is mandatory. The drug test screens five substances, including marijuana.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to push, pull, bend, squat, stoop, climb stairs or ladders, and twist many times a day.
  • Must be able to safely lift, carry and load 50 pounds.
  • Physical capacity to endure exposure to inclement weather, dust, heavy machinery, and hazardous chemicals. Use of proper PPE may be required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • This position will work in both a shop environment and outside. Significant exposure to weather is possible.
