The ideal candidate for this position is an educator who actively embraces building the Accessible Education Center to serve populations historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education. With knowledge of both the strengths embodied by our diverse students and the barriers they face, the ideal candidate is well-poised to teach, support, and mentor Gavilan students. The ideal candidate desires connection with students and the community beyond the classroom and works to foster cross-cultural and anti-racist collaboration whether through creating research, scholarship, media, art, or cultural/political engagement opportunities. In joining Gavilan College, the ideal candidate thrives as a faculty member continually striving to employ anti-racist pedagogy and develop success strategies to meet the needs of historically underserved students.
In addition, the ideal candidate is skilled in assistive technology and educated in a range of instructional techniques and how to recognize which approach is best suited to a particular learner. They are experienced in working with individuals with disabilities, identifying assistive technology to meet their access and learning needs, and providing instruction in its use. The ideal candidate is skilled in the production and design of information in alternate media formats. They are creative, flexible, and collaborative in promoting the success of all students in an open-access learning environment.
Essential Duties
  • Provide one-on-one and/or group training and support for students, staff and faculty in the areas of assistive technology, alternate media, web accessibility, electronic information and accommodations for students with disabilities such as: low vision, blind, physical and learning disabilities.
  • Instruct educational assistance courses in Assistive Technology/Adapted Computer Technology and Learning Skills in accordance with approved course outlines.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge in the field of assistive technology and disability services; and engages in professional development activities through participation in workshops and conferences.
  • Assist students in achieving stated course objectives. Evaluate the progress of each student and notify students in need of counseling services, tutoring and/or specialized instruction.
  • Assess and anticipate computer needs with the production and design of information in alternate formats to meet the needs of students and disability support programs and services.
  • In collaboration with the IT department, coordinate the installation and maintenance of assistive computer technology in the High Tech Center, Learning Skills Lab and other District computer labs to meet the needs of students and disability support programs and services.
  • Collaborate with District Information Technology (IT) to research and implement new access technologies that may be suitable for implementation within the District, as it applies to the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Communicate and interface effectively with faculty, staff, administration, and community partners, including Department of Rehabilitation, HOPE Services, Regional Centers, Independent Living Centers, etc. regarding digital access to campus on-line courses, instructional materials, and student support services.
  • Develop and implement coursework, materials and processes that meet brailling, captioning and other alternate media and assistive computer technologies.
  • Demonstrate and operate assistive technologies and provide instructional/technical support to staff in the High Tech Center, Learning Skills Lab, and any other areas of the District.
  • Maintain accurate confidential records, in accordance with department recording standards and procedures.
  • Develop, review and update curriculum and learning outcomes to meet the needs of diverse students in all modalities.
  • Train and lead the work of staff, who provide classroom support in Assistive Technology classes and work with students in the High Tech Center.
  • Contribute technical expertise and computer support to District programs and services.
  • Participate in various departmental, divisional and campus-wide activities as stipulated by the collective bargaining agreement and as designated by the shared governance process.
  • Contribute to department and campus-wide student success initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience
Educational and Professional Requirements:
  • Master's degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in the category of disability, special education, education, psychology, educational psychology, or rehabilitation counseling; OR equivalent, AND
  • Fifteen semester units of upper division or graduate study in adapted computer technology (assistive computer technology).

Desirable Attributes:
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize a variety of assistive technology and resources to enhance learning and independence for students with disabilities.
  • Teaching or counseling experience within the past four years providing instruction and/or guidance to persons with disabilities, preferably in a college environment.
  • Assess the technology needs of students and determine the appropriate assistive technology to support/meet their identified accommodations and their access to educational/course materials, including online materials.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of guidelines, regulations and/or policies for individuals with disabilities
  • (ADA/AA, Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act) alternate media, distance education and electronic information including the Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Standards, and the Assistive Technology Act of 1998.
  • Demonstrate experience of universal design and innovative teaching methodologies as a framework for achieving equity.
  • Expertise in the use of assistive computer technologies, information technology and software for students who have disabilities.
  • Experience in creating training materials to teach assistive technology programs, including JAWS, ZoomText, Fusion, Kurzweil 3000, Read&Write and Dragon.
  • Demonstrate excellence in preparation and knowledge in the creation and use of alternate media formats.
  • Experience developing/reviewing curriculum and assessing learning outcomes.

Physical Characteristics: The physical abilities involved in the performance of essential duties are:
Sedentary position requires use of a computer and related equipment for extended periods of time; frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; communicating and providing information to others; work outside on all parts of the campus and in varying weather conditions.
