Location: St. Louis, Missouri (Onsite/Hybrid โ€” 9717 Landmark Parkway, St. Louis, MO 63127)

Reports To: Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-Time

Company Overview

Karpel Solutions is a St. Louis-based technology company founded in 1985 that builds and hosts CJIS-compliant case management software for prosecutorial agencies and other government clients nationwide. Its flagship platform, PROSECUTORbyKarpel (PbK), supports end-to-end prosecutorial workflows โ€” from case intake and charging through discovery, court events, and post-disposition reporting โ€” and is delivered through Karpelโ€™s HOSTEDbyKarpel cloud environment. Karpel serves hundreds of clients nationwide and continues to grow through investment from Thompson Street Capital Partners.

Position Summary

The Manager of IT is a working manager role responsible for both cloud engineering supporting client-hosted environments and internal corporate IT at Karpel Solutions. This person sets priorities and coordinates day-to-day work across the service desk, development, and implementation teams, while remaining hands-on โ€” directly executing technical work rather than delegating exclusively. The ideal candidate is a technical leader who is equally comfortable managing a team and personally resolving a complex issue.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage internal IT and cloud engineering staff (network engineers, IT generalists/help desk, and cloud engineers), setting priorities and ensuring day-to-day coverage.
  • Coordinate priorities and workflows across the service desk, development, and implementation teams to ensure smooth operations and timely issue resolution.
  • Personally perform hands-on cloud infrastructure deployment, monitoring, and troubleshooting for client-hosted and internal systems, and serve as the primary escalation point for complex issues and outages.
  • Plan and execute infrastructure changes, upgrades, and cloud migrations, performing implementation work directly when needed, on time and within budget.
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery, business continuity, and backup strategies to protect company and client data.
  • Establish and enforce cloud and network security best practices, including access controls, monitoring, patching, and incident response.
  • Manage IT projects from scoping through delivery, coordinating cross-functional stakeholders and communicating status to leadership.
  • Evaluate, select, and manage relationships with technology vendors, MSPs, and service providers, coordinating directly on technical matters as needed.
  • Maintain network administration standards across on-premises and cloud environments, ensuring reliability and minimal downtime.
  • Document IT policies, procedures, infrastructure changes, and network architecture to support continuity and knowledge transfer.
  • Partner with company leadership on IT budgeting, staffing plans, and organizational structure as the company evolves.
  • Support broader technology initiatives across the organization, including infrastructure transitions.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises internal IT and cloud engineering staff (network engineers, IT generalists/help desk, and cloud engineers) and coordinates work with development and implementation teams. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and team development, while remaining personally engaged in day-to-day technical execution.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 7+ years of progressive IT experience, including experience leading or coordinating technical teams.
  • Demonstrated hands-on expertise in cloud infrastructure deployment, monitoring, and troubleshooting (e.g., Azure, AWS, or similar platforms).
  • Strong background in cloud security, disaster recovery planning, and infrastructure/migration execution.
  • Proven ability to manage IT projects from scoping through delivery, on time and within budget.
  • Solid understanding of network administration, systems architecture, and IT operations.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with a willingness to remain hands-on with technical work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, Microsoft/Azure or AWS certifications, Security+, CISSP).
  • Experience supporting both internal operations and client-facing/hosted infrastructure in a technology, software, or managed services company.
  • Experience coordinating across service desk, development, and implementation teams.

Core Competencies

  • Working Technical Leadership
  • Cloud & Infrastructure Management
  • Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Operational Reliability
  • Vendor & Cost Management
