What does an insurance sales intern do?

An Insurance Sales Intern assists experienced insurance agents or sales teams by learning about insurance products, customer service, and sales techniques. They may help generate leads, contact potential clients, and prepare quotes or proposals. Interns often shadow professionals to gain hands-on experience and develop their communication and sales skills. Their main goal is to understand the insurance industry and support the team while preparing for a potential full-time role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance sales intern?

To thrive as an Insurance Sales Intern, you need a basic understanding of insurance products, strong interpersonal skills, and typically a high school diploma or ongoing college education. Familiarity with CRM software, Microsoft Office, and sometimes industry-specific training or licensing (like a state insurance license) is beneficial. Proactive communication, active listening, and a customer-focused attitude help interns stand out in building client relationships and learning from experienced agents. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively supporting sales processes and developing foundational expertise for a future career in insurance sales.

What can I expect from the mentorship and training provided during an insurance sales internship?

As an Insurance Sales Intern, you can expect to receive hands-on mentorship from experienced agents, often through shadowing, regular feedback sessions, and structured training programs. These opportunities are designed to help you develop product knowledge, understand effective sales techniques, and build client relationship skills. Most agencies foster a collaborative environment where interns can ask questions, participate in team meetings, and gradually take on real sales responsibilities under supervision. This supportive structure not only accelerates your learning but also helps you build a strong professional network within the insurance industry.

Job description

Interested in building a career in sales? Do you enjoy meeting new people, asking thoughtful questions, and turning conversations into business opportunities? Premier's Sales Internship gives you hands-on experience prospecting for new business, building customer relationships, and learning how successful sales teams create value for customers.

WHO WE ARE:

At Premier you will find an environment where you are seen, heard and valued. Join us and experience what it means to live a culture of C.A.R.E!

JOB SCOPE:

Our 10-week, paid Summer Internship Program gives college students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the day-to-day work of a leading national trailer leasing and rental company. As a Sales Intern, you will learn how to prospect for new business, build customer relationships, communicate the Premier value proposition, and support opportunities throughout the sales process. You will work alongside Branch Managers and Sales Representatives, gain direct customer-facing experience, and learn how sales, operations and customer service work together to serve customers.

This is a full-time, on-site Intern role from May 31 through August 6, 2027 (8AM - 5PM, Monday through Friday) at our Dallas, TX branch and Plano, TX corporate office.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Prospecting and lead generation techniques.
  • Customer relationship building and business-to-business communication.
  • How to understand customer needs and communicate Premier's value proposition.
  • CRM and sales pipeline management.
  • Trailer specifications, applications and the solutions Premier provides customers.
  • How sales, operations and customer service work together throughout the customer lifecycle.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research prospective customers, identify new business opportunities and conduct outbound prospecting, including phone outreach.
  • Join Branch Managers and Sales Representatives on customer visits and gain experience presenting the Premier Value Proposition, including Rent, Lease, Trailer Tracking, LDW and other services offered by the company.
  • Provide support to customers visiting the branch and communicating via phone and email.
  • Conduct customer satisfaction and follow-up calls and assist with appointment setup.
  • Update the CRM system with sales calls, opportunities and customer contacts.
  • Learn basic trailer specifications and applications to better understand and support customer needs.
  • Assist with generating customer rental/leasing agreements, reviewing insurance and completing related administrative documentation.
  • Assist with Accounts Receivable collections to gain exposure to the customer account lifecycle.
  • Assist Branch and Corporate teams with projects that support sales, customer service and operational priorities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current enrollment in a four-year degree or graduate program. Business, Marketing, Sales, Communications, Supply Chain, Logistics or related majors are preferred; students from all majors are encouraged to apply.
  • Rising junior or senior preferred.
  • GPA of 3.0 or greater.
  • Interest in sales, business development, account management or other customer-facing careers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to ask questions, meet new people and initiate conversations.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, coachability, resilience, time management and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week for the full May 31 - August 6, 2027 internship period with minimum absences.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Because understanding our equipment is an important part of learning to sell Premier solutions, interns will spend time in the branch learning about and inspecting trailers.

  • When needed, physically inspect trailers inside and out, including getting in the trailer as well as underneath the trailer.
  • Walk up and down flights of stairs as needed and continually walk the yard.
  • Get in and out of an automobile repeatedly when visiting customers.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites - Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
