HR Operations Manager

Position Summary

NexGen Steel is seeking an experienced HR Operations Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of our Human Resources department. This role is responsible for ensuring HR processes are executed accurately, consistently, and in compliance with company policies and employment laws across multiple states.

As NexGen Steel continues to expand nationally, the HR Operations Manager will play a critical role in building scalable HR systems, maintaining compliance, supporting payroll operations, administering HR technology, and coordinating safety compliance documentation. This position serves as the operational backbone of the HR department, allowing the Director of Human Resources & Safety to focus on strategic initiatives, executive partnership, talent acquisition, and organizational growth.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, process-driven, detail-oriented, and enjoys improving systems while supporting a fast-paced manufacturing organization.

Key Responsibilities

HR Operations

  • Manage the daily operations of the Human Resources department.
  • Maintain accurate employee records and confidential personnel files.
  • Administer and optimize BambooHR and other HR systems.
  • Process employee status changes, promotions, transfers, wage adjustments, and separations.
  • Prepare employment documentation and HR correspondence.
  • Maintain HR templates, forms, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure HR processes are standardized across all company locations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve HR workflows, automation, and operational efficiency.

Payroll Administration

  • Coordinate and audit semi-monthly payroll processing.
  • Review employee timecards and identify discrepancies before payroll is finalized.
  • Verify wage changes, promotions, bonuses, and payroll adjustments.
  • Coordinate payroll corrections and maintain payroll documentation.
  • Prepare payroll reports and support Finance with payroll-related information.
  • Ensure payroll practices comply with federal and state regulations.

HR Compliance

  • Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Coordinate multi-state compliance requirements as the company expands.
  • Maintain employment documentation and required labor law records.
  • Assist with workers' compensation administration and documentation.
  • Maintain the employee handbook and company HR policies.
  • Coordinate policy implementation and employee acknowledgments.
  • Support internal HR audits and regulatory compliance initiatives.
  • Track required labor law postings and employment notices.

Safety Administration

  • Maintain OSHA training records and compliance documentation.
  • Track forklift certifications and required recertifications.
  • Coordinate employee safety training schedules.
  • Maintain safety logs, inspection records, and corrective action documentation.
  • Assist Operations leadership with OSHA documentation and compliance reporting.
  • Maintain training matrices and required safety certifications.

HR Reporting & Analytics

  • Prepare monthly HR reports and dashboards.
  • Track employee headcount, turnover, and retention metrics.
  • Monitor PTO balances and training compliance.
  • Prepare payroll and compliance reports for executive leadership.
  • Identify trends and recommend process improvements based on HR data.

Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and document HR Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Standardize HR processes across multiple facilities.
  • Improve document management and record retention practices.
  • Recommend process improvements that increase efficiency and reduce administrative burden.
  • Support the implementation of new HR technologies and automation tools.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of progressive Human Resources experience.
  • Experience coordinating payroll and HR operations.
  • Strong knowledge of employment law and HR compliance.
  • Experience administering HRIS platforms (BambooHR preferred).
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting employees across multiple states.
  • Manufacturing, industrial, or construction industry experience.
  • Familiarity with OSHA recordkeeping and safety administration.
  • Experience with payroll systems and HR reporting.
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification.

Within the first year, the HR Operations Manager will:

  • Ensure payroll and employee records are accurate and audit-ready.
  • Maintain compliance with multi-state employment regulations.
  • Develop scalable HR systems to support continued company growth.
  • Improve HR documentation, reporting, and operational efficiency.
  • Become the trusted operational leader for Human Resources while partnering closely with the Director of Human Resources & Safety.
