Position Title: EMPLOYEE RELATIONS MANAGER - LOS ANGELES, CA 

Salary:  $90000 - $115000 / yr

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Employee Relations Manager to assist our Southern California portfolio. This person will be based in the greater Los Angeles area and must have the ability to travel to accounts in Universal City, Burbank, Glendale and Whittier (50% travel in local SoCal market - this is a remote role when not traveling and mileage will be reimbursed). Union experience is a must for this role.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Regional HR Manager and HR A &G (when applicable) to assist in onsite investigations involving employees, making disciplinary action recommendations as necessary.
  • Utilize investigative techniques with employees and managers to complete thorough investigations.  
  • Have the ability to summarize complex issues and investigations and make recommendations to Regional HR utilizing all Compass policies and Federal & California State laws.
  • In conjunction with Regional HR, Partners with client HR in the event that it is necessary.
  • Researches and explains laws and legal affairs concerning employment to managers, supervisors, and employees.
  • Ensure investigations are completed with recommendations made for next steps.
  • Follow up with management at accounts on action planning and training as necessary as an outcome of the investigation.
  • Advises and trains managers and supervisors in best employee relations practices and strategies for managing supervisor problems and employee grievances. Develops further training as needed.
  • Must have the ability to know when to escalate issues and collaborate in recommendations for disciplinary actions.
  • Works in conjunction with Labor Relations Management to ensure collective bargaining agreement is followed and Union grievances are mitigated to the extent possible at Unionized accounts.
  • Must be resourceful, with the ability to navigate through a large corporation while understanding applicable policies, procedures, and approval processes.
  • Occasional HR /Safety related project management as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough understanding of California employment laws, as well as and Federal employment laws.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, local City & State ordinances, and policies.
  • Thorough understanding of dispute resolution.
  • Ability to remain tactful, calm, and persuasive in controversial and/or confrontational situations.  
  • Must be able to multi-task effectively, managing multiple issues and projects as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field preferred. 
  • Four years of professional human resource administration, including two years in employee relations preferred.
  • Prior experience in HR within hospitality, retail, or food & beverage industry is preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a unionized environment.
  • California experience in HR is required.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Chinese is preferred.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred.
