What Is a Demand Planner?

A demand planner oversees supply chains and forecasts supply and demand for companies. Their responsibility is to perform data analysis and design a demand plan, which is a reliable forecast report used to help determine the appropriate amount of supplies through cycles of high and low market demand. Using this planning system often results in significant cost reduction for a supply channel. Demand planners often build knowledge or relationships with many companies in their supply chain to help them understand the driving forces further down the supply chain.

How does a Demand Planner typically collaborate with sales and supply chain teams to improve forecast accuracy?

Demand Planners work closely with both sales and supply chain teams to align demand forecasts with real-time market trends and inventory capabilities. They participate in regular meetings to review sales data, promotional plans, and supply constraints, ensuring that forecasts are based on the most current information. Open communication and data sharing between these departments help Demand Planners proactively adjust plans and minimize both stockouts and excess inventory, making cross-functional collaboration a key aspect of the role.
