Job Overview

The Senior Accountant is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the integrity of BHCCU accounting systems and financial reporting. The Senior Accountant will ensure that reporting is in compliance with NCUA, DFI, and IRS rules, along with the rules of any other applicable government agency. The Senior accountant will perform reconciliations of general ledger accounts and help with task assignments. The Senior Accountant ensures that all credit union financial policies and procedures are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Senior Accountant will lead project initiatives to improve operating efficiency of the accounting team and BHCCU.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the overall plans and objectives for the accounting area as they pertain to State and Federal regulations and to overall credit union operations.
  • Responsible for maintaining, balancing, and reconciling the general ledger and related accounts; including cash accounts, accounts payable and other general ledger accounts as specified on the reconciliation checklist.
  • Manage fixed assets, fixed assets in progress, lease capitalizations and prepaids in accordance with BHCCU policy.
  • Lead continuous review for efficiencies, profitability, and productivity improvements for the accounting team.
  • Responsible for month end close journal entries in the accounting system and preparing financial reports, including management and board reports.
  • Manage vendors in accounts payable system. Obtain W9s and maintain accurate vendor records for 1099 purposes.
  • Prepare and submit quarterly call report in accordance with NCUA and GAAP standards.
  • Complete Federal and State required tax returns, with the assistance of tax professionals as needed. Examples include but are not limited to, IRS Form 990 and Wisconsin Forms 4 and WT-7.
  • Maintain and lead Current Expected Credit Loss (CECL) calculation monthly in accordance with GAAP.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting process as requested.
  • Assist in annual external audits and regulatory exams.
  • Backup members of the accounting team to ensure smooth operation of accounting functions.
  • Follow Processes and procedures established to ensure compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). Complete required annual BSA training to ensure you understand your responsibilities that apply to BSA, including:
  • Understanding of BHCCU’s policies and procedures, as well as all rules and regulations which pertain to BSA.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS and COMPETENCIES

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified Public Accountant designation preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in the accounting or finance function of a credit union, community bank, or financial services company preferred.

  • Ability to analyze and resolve situations independently.
  • Ability to manage priorities and set deadlines.
  • Ability to move new business practices and drive efficiency in the department.
  • Advanced understanding of accounting rules and procedures including GAAP.
