As of Jun 11, 2026, the average weekly pay for exempt surgical tech in the United States is $1,882.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $1,403.85 and $2,307.69 per week, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Exempt Surgical Tech position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Exempt Surgical Tech, you need comprehensive knowledge of sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and patient safety protocols, typically acquired through a Surgical Technology certificate or associate degree. Competence with surgical instruments, operating room (OR) equipment, and familiarity with electronic case documentation systems is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure efficient, safe surgical procedures and effective collaboration with the surgical team in high-stakes environments.

What other jobs can a surgical tech do?

A surgical tech can transition into roles such as surgical assistant, operating room supervisor, or sterile processing technician, utilizing their knowledge of surgical procedures and sterile techniques. They may also pursue certifications to work as a surgical first assistant or move into healthcare support roles like patient care technician or medical equipment technician.

Can you get hired as a surgical tech with no experience?

Entry-level surgical tech positions often require some formal training or certification, but some employers may hire candidates with no experience if they demonstrate strong technical skills and a willingness to learn. Completing a surgical technology program and obtaining certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) can improve job prospects. On-the-job training is common for new surgical techs, but having relevant skills and education is highly beneficial.

Why don't surgical techs make more money?

Surgical techs typically earn modest wages due to the standardized nature of their role, which requires certification but involves limited advanced skills or responsibilities. Salary levels are also influenced by factors such as experience, location, and healthcare facility budgets, with many roles offering steady but not high compensation compared to other medical professions.

What kind of surgical tech gets paid the most?

Certified surgical technologists with specialized skills, such as those working in cardiovascular or neurosurgery, tend to earn higher salaries. Experience, certifications, and working in high-demand healthcare settings also contribute to increased pay for surgical techs.

What is an Exempt Surgical Tech job?

An Exempt Surgical Tech is a surgical technologist who is classified as exempt under labor laws, meaning they are typically salaried and not eligible for overtime pay. They assist surgeons during procedures by preparing operating rooms, sterilizing equipment, and handling surgical instruments. Their role may also include administrative or leadership duties, depending on the healthcare facility. This classification often applies to positions with advanced responsibilities or those in supervisory roles.

What are the typical responsibilities and daily duties of an Exempt Surgical Tech?

Exempt Surgical Techs play a key role in preparing the operating room, organizing instruments and equipment, and ensuring a sterile environment before, during, and after surgeries. They assist surgeons and nurses by passing instruments, managing surgical supplies, and anticipating the needs of the team throughout procedures. In addition, they may be responsible for handling specimens and ensuring all surgical instruments are properly accounted for and sterilized after each operation. Each day may vary in pace and complexity, but excellent organizational skills and adaptability are always essential. This hands-on role is an integral part of the surgical team, offering valuable experience for career advancement in healthcare.
