Entry-level surgical tech positions often require some formal training or certification, but some employers may hire candidates with no experience if they demonstrate strong foundational skills and a willingness to learn. What is an Exempt Surgical Tech job?

An Exempt Surgical Tech is a surgical technologist who is classified as exempt under labor laws, meaning they are typically salaried and not eligible for overtime pay. They assist surgeons during procedures by preparing operating rooms, sterilizing equipment, and handling surgical instruments. Their role may also include administrative or leadership duties, depending on the healthcare facility. This classification often applies to positions with advanced responsibilities or those in supervisory roles.

Why do surgical techs quit?

Surgical techs often leave the profession due to high stress, long or irregular hours, physical demands, and limited opportunities for advancement. Job dissatisfaction can also stem from workplace environment, staffing shortages, or inadequate compensation, which impact job stability and work-life balance.

What are the typical responsibilities and daily duties of an Exempt Surgical Tech?

Exempt Surgical Techs play a key role in preparing the operating room, organizing instruments and equipment, and ensuring a sterile environment before, during, and after surgeries. They assist surgeons and nurses by passing instruments, managing surgical supplies, and anticipating the needs of the team throughout procedures. In addition, they may be responsible for handling specimens and ensuring all surgical instruments are properly accounted for and sterilized after each operation. Each day may vary in pace and complexity, but excellent organizational skills and adaptability are always essential. This hands-on role is an integral part of the surgical team, offering valuable experience for career advancement in healthcare.

What other jobs can you do as a surgical tech?

Surgical technologists can transition into roles such as surgical assistants, operating room supervisors, or sterile processing technicians. They often leverage their knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, and sterilization, and may pursue additional certifications to qualify for advanced positions in perioperative or healthcare support roles.
