SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The Quality Assurance and Food Safety (QAFS) Manager has the overall responsibility for quality assurance, quality control and food safety practices for Hearty Helpings Inc. (HHI)’s kitchens. The QAFS Manager is primarily responsible for monitoring and ensuring the Commissary, but also will ensure the secondary (CLC kitchen) and tertiary (Holt Street kitchen) are compliant. The QAFS Manager will ensure that products are safe and meet specifications, quality and reliability standards, complying with all governmental regulations, contractual obligations, state and local health department standards, Meals on Wheels America, Feeding America, ServSafe and AIB/ Safe Food Handling Practices & Procedures. The QAFS Manager also oversees the safety and sanitation of the kitchens and delivery vehicles to ensure that proper environmental management and bacterial management are fully in compliance to maintain the penultimate food safety standards.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides quality assurance oversight to ensure the food preparation, storage and transportation meet or exceed compliance requirements and AIB/Safe Food Handling Practices and Procedures;
  • Maintains and implements sanitary and food safety conditions and trainings in partnership with internal and external resources to adhere to auditing procedures and statutory regulations per state and local Health Department Regulations;
  • Provides quality and safety training to all commissary staff and also may train other HHI staff as needed or requested including but not limited to nutrition team members and relevant volunteer;
  • Co-chairs the AIB Food Safety Committee;
  • Prepares and updates statistical reports to ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, contractual obligations, Meals on Wheels America, Feeding America and AIB/Safe Food Handling policies and procedures;
  • Develops, implements, maintains and communicates the safety metric;
  • Conducts pre-operation inspections with daily ATP confirmations. Communicates the results of the tests and identifies and communicates remedial actions when tests indicate potential issues;
  • Monitors bacteria levels. Identifies, implements and communicates any corrective measures as required;
  • Ensures the appropriate sanitation of the site and vehicles in cooperation with facilities and the transportation team;
  • Establishes a safe work environment for employees by performing safety audits and inspections, conducting safety-related training, and maintaining on-going communications with employees;
  • Maintains kitchen and storage facilities to meet/exceed sanitary conditions; monitors internal quality assurance and food safety audit process (including Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) record keeping and training in HACCP standards of all relevant staff and volunteers);
  • Supervises Sanitation Workers and provides direction to food service operations to ensure a safe environment;
  • Assigns and monitors the deep cleaning of all areas, ensures the footbaths and drains are addressed according to the cleaning schedule. Coordinates with facilities to resolve maintenance issues that affect sanitation or food safety;
  • Communicates performance standards to staff and volunteers, recognizing and rewarding individual and team accomplishments and counseling performance problems as necessary in collaboration with the Human Resources team;
  • Develops operating policies and procedures as necessary;
  • Ensures all staff and relevant volunteers have the resources and capabilities to effectively accomplish their responsibilities;
  • Assisting with any and all mission work as needed and requested with some or no prior notice including, but not limited to: serving as a truck spotter, helping with FARM Market/Community Garden/Freight Farms/on and off site food distributions, preparation of meals and serving home-delivered meals; and
  • Other duties as assigned or needed.
Requirements:
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and 4 years of experience in a direct or oversight food quality assurance role or eight years in a direct or oversight food quality assurance role;
  • Food Handler’s/Food Protection License required, ServSafe preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to direct, coach and train team members;
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems;
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Culinary Services ERP software;
  • A valid and current NYS driver’s license in and access to an automobile;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment;
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to quickly and decisively evaluate alternative solutions;
  • Ability to provide internal/external customer service experience; and
  • Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 lbs.
