Library Associate

Job Summary:

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Continually looking for opportunities to have Library patrons feel welcome and connected to library materials and services.
• Assist patrons with locating materials or the information desk, using computers, or explaining procedures (checking out, logging onto the Internet, making copies, etc.)
• Assist with customer service activities including patron orientation, check-in-out, creating displays, shelving, etc.
• Assist with programming, promotional and outreach activities.
• Assist department supervisor with overseeing staff scheduling, training and supply ordering.
• Serve as a department representative to the Staff Team Building committee.
• Assist department supervisor in preparing monthly activity reports and general day to day operations for your assigned library areas; to include general opening/closing activities etc.
• Oversee the ongoing grooming of your assigned library collection areas.
• Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library.
• Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
• Other activities as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• H.S. Diploma or GED required; some college preferred.
• 2 years library experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Good organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office suite including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Excellent listening, communication, and presentation abilities.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include some weekend and evening work.

Work Environment:

• Fast paced public library. Self-starter with ability to work in a self-directed environment with minimal guidance.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
• Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
