Position Purpose

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for developing, managing, and executing ongoing public relations and marketing strategies and activities that safeguard and promote the reputation of the Houston Food Bank, elevate awareness of HFB services and activities and support the successful cultivation and acquisition of necessary resources. Provides leadership to inter-departmental, cross-functional teams and acts as primary departmental liaison throughout the organization. Tracks and reports departmental metrics. Models and monitors excellence in customer service. Creates and maintains departmental budget.

  1. Assumes responsibility for developing, managing, and executing ongoing public relations and marketing strategies and activities that safeguard and promote the reputation of the Houston Food Bank.
  2. Thoroughly understands the Houston Food Bank, its mission and policies, culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs, and finances.
  3. Prepares communications work plan that reflects year-round activities in media relations, web-based media, graphic design, print, and video production.
  4. Ensures Marketing and Communications strategies are developed and implemented on a timely basis and reflect consistent quality.
  5. Assumes primary responsibility for relationships with representatives from media outlets.
  6. Manages the production of promotional logo items for sale throughout the organization.
  7. Provides exemplary customer service to external and internal stakeholders.
  8. Provides accurate metrics that are generated on a timely basis.
  9. Ensures departmental budget reflects the work plan and is monitored effectively.
  10. Demonstrates digital fundraising knowledge and works on strategy.
  11. Has public relations and advertising experience.
  12. Responsible for strategic messaging externally to the general public, partner agencies, donors, volunteers, and staff.
  13. Has Crisis Communication experience and serves on the internal disaster response committee.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES (Yes/No):
  • Yes. Supervises the Marketing Communications Manager, the Digital Marketing Manager, and the Public Relations Vendor

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Liberal Arts, or other related disciplines
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of communications, public relations, marketing, or related fields; experience in a large nonprofit is preferred but not required.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
  • N/A

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Proficiency in graphic design and web-based software and Microsoft Office suite
  • Demonstrated fluency in communications strategy and implementation
  • Proficiency in graphic design using Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent products
  • Fluency in social media, web trends, and best practices
  • A proven manager who promotes teamwork, creativity, and open communications
  • Flexibility in re-ordering priorities in response to changing needs, while identifying those activities that must be accomplished
  • Competency in calculating and formulating elements of a budget
  • Analytical and uses good judgment
  • Ability and willingness to participate in activities outside the workday schedule
  • Crisis Communications experience
  • Ability to provide Media Relations/Training
  • Develop and implement marketing plans/strategies
  • Work with Direct Marketing firms on advertising campaigns
  • Familiarity with Metric Dashboards
  • Familiarity with a Media Tracking Platform
  • Budgeting

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the associate is required daily to analyze and interpret data, communicate, and remain in a standing or stationary position for a significant amount of the workday; and often access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The associate must regularly move about the office and around the facility, use hands, wrists, and fingers to grip, type, and write. The associate will need to have the average ability to hear horns, warnings, and alerts associated with a warehouse. The associate must occasionally travel to other sites for business.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those associate encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While the job is generally performed in an enclosed office environment, the associate is occasionally exposed to freezers, enclosed and/or tight spaces, wet and/or humid conditions, areas in which moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals are present, strong food-related smells, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the office environment is typically quiet, but the associate will be occasionally exposed to loud noise levels (e.g., horns, fans).

TRAVEL REQUIRED:

This role supports all hours of operations at the Houston Food Bank facilities as necessary and requires a flexible work schedule.
