The HR Policy and Compliance Manager is responsible for creating and fostering a positive relationship with our employees. By working collaboratively with the People and Culture team, the HR Policy and Compliance Manager will develop and implement HR policy, governance, workplace safety training programs, and managing employee relations cases.

  • We take a proactive approach vs reactive (Being in front of changes that will impact our business i.e. changes in legislation, environment, educating managers, etc.)

Overview Of Responsibilities

HR Governance:
  • Conducts a continuing study of all Human Resources policies, programs, and practices to keep management informed of new developments.
  • Selects and supervises Human Resources consultants, and attorneys, and coordinates company use of outside sources.
  • Directs the preparation and maintenance of reports as are necessary to carry out the functions of the department. Prepares periodic reports for management, as necessary or requested, to track strategic goal accomplishment.
  • Oversees the research, development, implementation, management, and enforcement of employment-related company policies and practices.

Employee Relations, Legal:
  • Protects the interests of employees and the company by following company Human Resources policies and governmental laws and regulations. Maintains minimal company exposure to lawsuits.
  • Provide current and effective organizational employment relations advice/ subject matter expertise in alignment with our policies and values.
  • Design processes for a variety of employee issues (disciplinary, terminations, etc.).
  • Direct the preparation of information requested or required for compliance with laws. Approves all information submitted.
  • Monitors and advises managers and supervisors in the progressive discipline system of the company. Monitors the implementation of a performance improvement process with non-performing employees.

Health and Safety
  • Lead the implementation of company health and safety programs
  • Support employees and managers through the injury management process and
  • Coordinate and maintain reporting metrics and requirements for the OH&S program
  • Review incident reports, monthly statistics, and inspection reports and can identify undesirable trends and provide appropriate recommendations
  • Own relationship with all appropriate governing bodies on health and safety matters (i.e. WCB, Occupational Health and Safety)
  • Develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines
  • Prepare and enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety
  • Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law
  • Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention
  • Monitor compliance with policies and laws
  • Investigate where appropriate, accidents or incidents to discover causes and handle worker’s compensation claims
  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures

Requirements (Skills And Abilities)
  • Highly motivated, energetic, and a natural leader and influencer
  • Extensive hands-on experience managing employee relations, legal compliance issues, and health in safety in multiple provinces
  • Experience in retail or hospitality, specifically in multi-unit organizations with more than 1,000 employees
  • Brings a common-sense approach to their work 
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
  • Is creative and innovative in their approach. Looks for opportunities to minimize process and needless red tape
  • Highly effective communication and negotiation skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Ability to deliver results to demanding deadlines
